Ok... After watching the succeeding episodes with a more critical eye, I have to say now I'm 99% sure I was wrong. The people who have been writing the episodes lately aren't capable of that kind of subtlety, or at least wouldn't use it in OFF. Even the season finale was only fair at best.

You're right, they changed everything just to give it to the south park guys in such a weak and pathetic way, well over 5 years after south park poked fun at them despite the fact they were already well on they way producing the batch of episodes this one occurred in. I am sure fox picked up the extra expense as well.
