There have been a few other episodes in the past that didn't have a chalkboard gag. In this case it would go straight from the clouds opening to the Simpsons arriving at the house. Of course, there's always been a couch gag though...

Technically, they haven't always had a couch gag. There's a full list on the "openings" page but some examples are 7G05, 7G08, many TOHs...

By golly you're right. I also wasn't thinking about the 1st christmas special and now that I think of it, bart the general didn't have one either. It just showed their house and then the next shot takes place inside the oven, where Marge is making cupcakes for Lisa's class :) D'oh...

As for the simpsons spinoff showcase, this remains the only episode that I don't have on tape or even seen once, for that matter...... due to a trip out of state to my granparents' house who didn't have a TV (!!!!). I set the damn vcr back at home to tape it when it originally aired but the power went out. I haven't seen the spinoff showcase in syndication either. I suppose I'll see it one day.. but it sounds kind of dumb, from what I've read in the episode guide. That's a secret I often keep from my friends.... that there is one episode I'm missing. I am worried that some day, someone will ask me, "hey, let's watch that simpsons spinoff showcase episode"... but I'll probably just say, "Oh.. I forgot which tape that's on!" Mwahahahaha....

Just say you're morally opposed to spinoffs. Works better with clip shows though.

Plus, don't forget that technically The Simpsons is a spinoff of The Tracey Ullman Show.

I don't think that's a spinoff. The Simpsons originated on The Tracey Ullman Show as short bits, and now they're on as a thirty minute show. A spinoff would be more like if The Simpsons originated on Ullman and then The Homer Simpson Show (or something like that) was created.

Are you sure? What about something like Laverne and Shirley spun off from Happy Days? The real question is if you can say that the Simpsons on the Tracey Ullman Show counted as characters or not...I'd say yes.
