Explosion at Washington Sawmill Injures Five

SHELTON, Wash. (June 23) - An air compressor explosion at a sawmill blew out a wall and injured five people Wednesday morning, a company spokeswoman said.

All five were taken to nearby Mason General Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Shelly Dunnington said. A police dispatcher said one was then flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, the region's only major trauma center, and two more were expected to follow.

Dunnington said she could not release information about the nature of the injuries. But Bev Holland, a spokeswoman for Simpson Timber Co., said all five were able to walk out of the mill.

The air compressor was at the back of the sawmill, where the company produces lumber for home construction, Holland said. She said there had been no previous problems with the machinery.

Duane Wilson, manager of a lumber and hardware store about 500 yards from the mill, said he felt a blast and a rumble, then saw steam.

"It shook our whole building," Wilson told The Associated Press. "I thought it was the start of an earthquake, and I thought it was way farther away."

Shelton is about 80 miles southwest of Seattle.

2-year-old boy dies in mower accident

SOUTH KITSAP -- A 2-year-old boy was killed yesterday when he was struck by a riding lawn mower driven by a family member, Kitsap County sheriff's officials said.

Tyler Johnson of South Kitsap was taken to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma, where he died upon arrival.

Sheriff's officials said an adult family member at a residence in the 5000 block of East Collins Road, South Kitsap, had placed Tyler near a children's sandbox in the middle of the yard and then began cutting grass in the back yard with a riding lawn mower.

A portion of the back yard, about four feet wide by 20 feet long, runs north-to-south between a property line fence and the residential structure. The strip is not wide enough to allow the riding mower to be turned around.

When approaching the narrow strip, the lawn mower driver saw Tyler near the sandbox, off to the side and about 25 feet away, authorities said.

The driver, whom sheriff's deputies declined to identify, entered the strip. At the end of the narrow piece of lawn, the driver placed the mower into reverse and started to back up. The mower reversed a few feet when the driver felt the mower strike something. The mower stopped and the driver looked down and saw Tyler.

The machine was large and too heavy to lift and the driver called 911, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene at about 11 a.m. and determined that the incident was accidental. There will be no charges.
