What i like the most about the simpsons, is that they set themselves up for a funny joke, and then do the exact opposite, which nobody expected. like when homer had to find lisa when she was lost downtown, he had to get higher, so he bought a bunch of balloons, and everybody expected he was going to try to float up on the balloons, but then he gives them to a guy and say "i'll give you these balloons if i can use your cherry-picker"

what are the other scenes like this?

Winter used to be my favorite season, then I read Ethan Frome.

Also, an example, in THOH 5, when Homer travelles trough time and makes Ned rule the world. When he tries to escape from the "re-Neducation", he is chased by some blood thirsty dogs. He then gets an idea and pulls some wieners out of his pocket. Now, everybody is expecting him to distract the dogs with them, but instead he says "These wieners will give me extra energy!", eats them and runs away.

In season 12's Treehouse of Horror, in the fairy tale story when Bart and Lisa visit the Three Bears' house.. Bart tries one bowl of porridge which is too cold, and one that is too hot. He says "This doesn't take a genius" and (instead of trying the 3rd bowl), he pours some of the hot porridge into the cold porridge to make it lukewarm.

The superbowl episode when they are trying to get in the stadium and Homer spies a rack of band uniforms--and uses it to shove the guard out of the way

And another, when Lisa is lost and Homer sees a guy holding a bunch of helium balloons and uses them....to bribe the guy with the cherry picker.

Meh. I prefer to skim a couple lines and then reply without reading all the other posts. Makes me feel important!

The Treehouse of Terror with Bart's evil twin where the camera shows 2 pots and bart says 'its too cramped in here, we can't hide in here!' and you think they're in the pots but then they burst out of the coat closet.

The Try-N-Save episode where bart steals and then Marge tells him that they're going to go get the family photo taken there and steams shoots out of barts ears but then marge goes behind him and takes two steaming pots of tea off of the stove.

Theyve done this so often lately that for me it's become predictable

ben-pLegion1979

yea, you are right. they did it in "kill the alligator" when he saw the keys for the hand cuffs hanging on a nail, but then homer broke the hancuffs on the nail, instead of unlocking them with the keys.

My favorite example of this is in "Dumbbell Indemnity" when Homer is sitting in jail and Hans Moleman asks him if he'd like something to read. He picks up "How to Tunnel Out of Prison," says "This could come in handy," and then knocks Hans out with the book and steals his bookcart. Classic.

I believe no one mentioned the one in "Bart Gets Famous". Bart wants to escape from the box factory, so he hides in the laundry basket. Seconds later he just exits through the back door.

My personal favorite occurs in "Lemon of Troy." Bart has almost given up on the search for the lemon tree and sits down on a curb. He says something to the effect of "Oh, this whole search is as useless as that yellow, lemon-shaped rock over there. Wait a minute! There's a lemon behind that rock!"

One that immediately comes to mind is from THOH V, 2F03, where Neddie rules the world, Orwellian style. Homer is chased by some dogs, then reaches into his shirt, pulls out some wieners, and says: "Aha! These wieners will give me the quick energy I need to escape!"... and then does so! Great scene.

One of my favourite ever scenes would come under this catergory. Homer is banned from Moe's and later on a person looking exactly like Homer wearing a monocle, moustache, top hat and walking cane comes in saying his name is Guy Incognito. Immedietly Moe says to get out as he thinks it is Homer. Guy replies "Homer...who is Homer??" He gets booted out and then who comes walking down the street but Homer.

LOL

No idea which ep or season this one is but two guys are carrying a sheet of glass across the road. A car comes speeding by: they evade it. A second care in the chase comes through, again the glass escapes being smashed........ Then when they get across the road they just toss it in the dumpster anyway!

"Bart Gets An Elephant." (The first "car" was Stampy, I think.) I think they re-did the gag in some way this season.

Wasn't there a glass gag where the car hits the glass, but all that happens is that the workers get knocked down? One then says, "Wow. Tough glass."

Maybe doesn't fit 100% into the topic, but I've always loved the scene in the episode where Bart gets a "big brother" to Homer's dismay. Homer and the big brother guy are having a big fight in a Seaworld type place.

Homer throws some starfish at the guy, ninja style. The guy catches all of the star fish, and puts them in a nearby aquarium, saying something like "there you go fellas, nice and safe", and a second later a shark just eats them all.

The Big Brother even gives out a D'OH at that moment.

Classic!

They just ran "Bart gets an Elephant" here in Philly today. The family is complaining about how much the elephant is costing them, then the doorbell rings and it's a bunch of kids offering to pay him money to see the elephant. Homer yells at them to go away and slams the door, then pauses and says "Wait a second, this gives me an idea." In the next scene he's posting a sign on the front lawn that says "GO AWAY".

There's another similar scene where people say they'll pay him a dollar... it gives him an idea... he charges 50 cents... Hee hee hee.

It's in the episode where Lisa and her school digs up an "angel". The whole town comes to the door and I think it's Lenny who says, "I'll pay you a dollar to see the angel." and Homer says, "That gives me an idea." and in the next scene he's charging people 50 cents. I think.

One that slipped my mind right after watching the episode Sunday was the part about the chloroform and The Who's security guy.

Bart: Dad! The chloroform! Homer (to guard): I'll give you this bottle of chloroform if you take us to The Who.

This isn't exaaaactly "setting themselves up for funny joke", but I always like the scene in "Rosebud" where maggie is holding up Bobo up to the television screen while Kent Brockman is describing Bobo... How about the scene in the Tennis episode (title?) where they show Bart sipping champagne with Marge in a mansion, talking about getting rid of Homer. They persuaded him to take a tour of the guillatine factory: "Little did he realize that it was the perfect place to shoot him." I love that line!
