I thought he disappeared when they went on that field trip to the civil war fort, and were chased off for watching the battle reenactment without paying. The bus starts off, the kids run to catch up, and poor Uter never gets to the bus.

And I thought the bit about the parents asking for closure was a reference to that, to reinforce the fact that he did just disappear.

I'm pretty sure he was shown in between that episode and the one where his parents wanted closure, though. Unless there was a goof or the episodes didn't take place in the order in which they were shown, Uter probably had bad luck at more than one field trip.

I just noticed that this is not the only reference to cannibalism on The Simpsons.

They reran the episode where Bart works for Fat Tony, and Principal Skinner disappears. There's a scene where the kids are in the schoolyard speculating about what happened to Skinner, and someone said something about him being ground up and fed to them in the cafeteria.

I think that episode predates the Uter Halloween bit.

And I thought Kenny was dead. For good. Then I realized it was a cartoon and doesn't have the same dynamics as our real lives, so characters can come and go from the netherworld as they please.
