Change in the "Party Posse" episode

I noticed that instead of saying "old school" that one guy from Nsync or Back Street Boys or Menudo or New Kids on the Block or Hanson or whoever they were says "word" repeatedly instead. Did FOX censors decide that saying "old school" is offensive or incites violence or some ridiculous thing?

They didn't cut out the phrase "old-school." It's two different people who say each phrase- Justin wanders around saying "Word" and Joey jumps into the frame every now and again to say "old-school." This and the Bandana Republic sequence show that they can make good-natured fun of themselves. They're in on the joke.

You know Katijaikat, that episode really wasn't bad I've decided. *NSync was okay, and even sort of self-effacing. "Silent G" is actually a clever play on words that I hadn't noticed before. The style is still sort of the over-the-top zany style that says "Mike Scully" all over it, but there were plenty of things to like about the episode.

It has a lot of funny moments, I've increased my rating of it from crap to OKAY.

Hmm, I guess I didn't watch far enough into the episode. I thought he said that a couple times when they introduced themselves to Party Posse. Instead, they said "word".

I didn't notice that word being replaced; but Burns says "You call yourself Chinese?" instead of "You call yourself a Chinaman?" to Smithers, as in the premier.

Neither is autogyro, iced cream, or revulcanize. That's what makes it funny. Burns is so old he uses outdated nomenclature. It's not meant to be offensive. Paul

You have to have seen "The Big Lebowski" (one of the funniest movies of all time) in order to get the 'nomenclature' line.

I saw that in the theater, but just the one time. I don't remember the line. I just remember Jeff Bridges saying he may have to look in the toilet again after they gave him a swirlie.

Burns is always using outdated words. It's just to show he's not with the times. Chinaman didn't used to be offensive. Chinese people decided to be offended by it because it reminded them of having to work on our railroad system. Actually, even Chinese is no longer the preferred nomenclature. They decided that was offensive, too. Last week they preferred being called Asian American. I'm not sure what they want to be called this week.

I'm sure Chinese is fine when it's actually applied to somebody who IS from China. Unfortunately, it tends to get thrown around as a blanket term for ALL Asians- which, obviously, isn't true- there are immigrants from many other Asian countries, in the United States and elsewhere.

"Asian-American" or "Chinese-American" or "Filipino-American" or "Japanese-American," etc. etc. etc., is usually the preferred term for not only legal citizens of the United States, but also their children, grandchildren, and so on, who are first, second and third generation and really don't have that strong a connection to the country of their ethnic background. I know that when someone randomly comes up to me on the street or subway (it's happened) and asks where I'm from, there's more than a 50-50 chance they're going to respond to my answer of my birthplace, "Chicago," with "No, you know what I mean, where are you REALLY from." It's a bit irritating at times.
