For those not familiar with the Japanese “mon” titles:
Digimon: A franchise created by Bandai that’s adds a “battle” concept to their highly successful Tamagotchi line. Came out in the US in 1998 following the success of Tamagotchi in the country the previous year, but didn’t really became a hit stateside until the anime version (which was made to follow in the success of Polemon, althought the third season is actually kinda decent) premiered in the summer of 1999.
Pokemon: The quintisential “monster collecting” game, Pokemon is a Nintendo franchise about catching and collecting various creatures known as Pokemon and using them to battle fellow trainers. The game is one of the major selling points of the various Nintendo handheld systems, with Pokemon-themed games appearing on various Nintendo systems, and the anime being a huge hit in both Japan and America (with the show being one of the main titles behind the “anime boom” in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s).
