You knoiw, where Homer gets repeatedly squirted in the face with a hose? Just so happens the first commercial series of motion picture shorts by the Lumiere brothers of France included a brief vignette showing a guy getting repeatedly squirted in the face with a hose. These films were released in 1895 (the same year as the 1895 House OFF lived in -- get it?).

The film in question is "Arroseur et arrose" (Tables Turned on the Gardener). It was indeed released in 1895.
But this movie was based on a comic strip convention. Two versions appeared in 1887, but the definitive source was drawn by Frances leading comic strip pioneer Christophe (Georges Colomb) in 1889. (According to the book "Before Micky: The Animated Film 1898-1928" by Donald Crafton, pg 37-39.)
The Simpsons were the work of a comic strip artist, also. Coincidently, The Simpsons debut on the Tracy Ullman show in 1987 (I believe) and spun-off into their own show in 1989. Eerie, isn't it?
Speaking of comic strips, did you take note of the "Mutt and Jeff" reference.Someone was aware that "A. Mutt" was the first successful daily strip. A nice facsimile of the signature of M&J creator, Bud Fisher appears on the comic Bart hold up to the video camera. The problem is that the strip did not hit the papers until 1907. The first M&J comic book appeared in 1910 as a black and white reprint of the strips in book form. The item Bart has appears to be a Cupples and Leon reprint of the late 'teens early '20's. M&J were one of the first amimated cartoons as noted in Donald Graftons work. KLaup
