I know it's old, but this has been burning me. In "The Day the Violence Died" (3F16) when Lester and Eliza save the day, the show ends with Bart and Lester staring each other down. I thought these two would become recurring villains and it was really creepy in a cool way. Does anyone know what happened to that idea? Was it always a one-shot joke?

When this episode first aired, my mother was watching it with me and she said, "So I guess Lester will be a recurring character now" so apparently you weren't the only one to think that :) But I had always assumed it would just be a one-time thing. Lester looked too much like Bart and I guess newbies to the show would get them mixed up. He is actually based on some of Bart's early designs.
Yeah, it was just one-shot. Lester and Eliza resemble Bart and Lisa from the Tracy Ullman era of the Simpsons, if you didn't know, BTW.

It refers to the deeper concept of the episode (plagiarism satire). Lester and Eliza never returned because they are always there in her new form as Bart and Lisa. It would IMO make no sense to let them return, the base for the meta-humor would be missing. That�s the point of the "joke". I think I�ve mentioned it in one or two of my texts and reviews.
That�s IMO the point of 3F16 and that�s why I always say "Try to make a clear difference between surface plot and deeper layers of meaning." It really explains things like that.
