What leads the Simpsons success vs. Futurama? And what genre was Matt Groening looking for in Futurama?

Well if you think about it all television shows have some type of target audience. I think Futurama may have been going after the 15-25 adult male (the so called key demographic). However, the "failure:" of the show was not that it had bad content, or that it couldn't attract that audience, it was due mainly to scheduling. During the football season, if the 4:00 game ran late, you could almost always count on Fox not showing Futurama. I wonder about the effect of the fact that it was scheduled in the 7:00 slot (if i remember correctly). I say this because of the perpetual juggernaut on CBS which also airs at that time, 60 Minutes. But I realize the people watching 60 Minutes wouldn't be watching Futurama, and vice versa.

"15-25" is a bit narrow. I think the desired "key demographic" is more like ages 18-49 and, if you think about it, the older Generation X'ers are near 40...a group this type of show definitely appeals to.

Actually, "Futurama" had some funny gags and some funny episodes, but it was uneven. Worse, you really didn't care about the characters.

At its peak, "The Simpsons" was consistently funny, and the characters are way more likeable than those on "Futurama". Think about who you like better: Homer or Fry? Marge or Leela? Troy McClure or Zapp Brannigan? See, it's not much of a contest.
