I was watching the first season DVD set this morning and I noticed that all of the opening credits for "Bart the General" except "directed by David Silverman" were missing. Consulting my VHS copy, the others were in the establishing pull into the house and the shot inside the oven. Quite bizarre; does anyone know why? Is this problem only on region 1?
(I also noticed for the first time in 7G01 that "The Happy Little Elves and the Curious Bear Cub" is rated GGG and was released by Raskin Bobbins. Weird stuff.)
UGH!!! You're absolutely right. Who knows if it's only on region 1 - I have the original in a computer file and checked it against it...not only are those credits missing, they don't appear anywhere else instead. I don't know what the syndicated version does, but I believe it still does the straight-to-house (without TV) intro. So that makes at least 3 actual mistakes on the dvds... The Telltale Head missing two parts (this might have been an editorial decision); Bart the Genius correcting the spelling of Marcia Wallace (I call this a mistake, or at least a bad decision...it's misspelled in the synd version as well, and I think it's interesting to see those little mistakes. It's not like they redid the animation or dubbed Homer's lines in his new voice...I just hope they don't "fix" Marge's inverse blinking at the end of A Star Is Burns - that's one of my favorite animation errors!); and the leaving off of credits here. total ugh! For the record, here are the missing credits:

by the way, if anyone read down this far, since I noticed this months ago: someone said that for the end of Simpsons Tall Tales in the syndicated version, they used the footage from Take My Wife, Sleaze - when it was on today, it was the correct version (albeit smushed) - I'm guessing the other station switched credits (stations do that sometimes, it's mind-boggling). If the person who posted that is reading this, and if he/she taped it, check the tape and see what p-code is given. I'd be interested to know.
Yeah, it does, and all the credits are there. It must be a mistake. If you listen to the commentary track, just when John Swartzwelder's name would appear, Jim Brooks says "John's written more episodes than anybody, right?" so the copy they were watching most likely had the credits. It'd be interesting to see if the problem is in other regions.
I didn't really mind that they did this, because I never liked the sequences that were missing and it makes sense to me that they just decided shortly after production not to include a scene; still, I hope they eventually put the missing clips on a DVD of rarities or something. They could put the shorts on it. And some outtakes. My major concern is "Homer Defined"... will they use "bad influence, my ass"? I guess time will tell, since the 7G07 cut wasn't made for censorship reasons, we don't know if those Fox requests will be abided by on the discs yet.
I hadn't noticed! I do remember my synd copy having "Marsha Wallace" on it, though, you're right. Anybody know if this was ever corrected anywhere else (like, on the Fox airing right after the 100th episode)?
All the animation errors I remember were intact on the first season disc, so you needn't worry. :) Maggie still jumps across the frame for a second at the end of the Christmas special, so we're safe.
As far as these credits go, I seriously doubt they would do this intentionally. Maybe they'll even correct it on a later pressing (*stifled laughter*).
I wish they would, but they probably won't. But I hope that for the ones that haven't been put on DVD yet they include the alternate versions in special features...some are just edits, like "the...church" and such, but others would be interesting to see both ways (pier one, haing s ngor, my ass/my butt). I taped 7G07 on SP as soon as I could, and I intend to do the same for other episodes they screw up on the dvds.
I don't know about that...I'm guessing not, since unlike broadcasting, we pay for these. It's like movies in theaters, or anything on home video. If it comes to it, maybe they'd pull an American Pie and release a "less offensive version," but I don't think any of the censorships on fox would merit such a thing...I'm betting that at least the original of everything will stay, as long as they remember.
Ha - I'll have to look for that. One of my favorite glitches from that ep is the few seconds near the end where the background is obviously upside-down (a lampshade hanging from the ceiling, and an inverted picture near the floor!).
Don't I wish. I mean, you never know, they did it with The Complete Guide (except the erroneous airdates), but wasn't that published outside the fox realm with just a blessing by MG?
It would be nice for them to release a set at the end, after all seasons are released, that contains corrected versions of all of the mistakes they made on the DVDs. Of course no one outside ATS would buy it...haha.
Well, anyone who became a fan after that happened would...this also includes people who weren't big enough fans to buy them separately now, and of course people just being born...
"no" - someone I know had a bunch, and I grabbed the nonsyndicated ones. Beats me where he got them. There were a fair number, though, so I guess you should try harder. (why won't you be unsyndicated??) but you didn't hear that from _me_.
I can get almost all the episodes uncut from the television. But a few episodes from season one, three, and four air cut. + almost all of season 2.
I would one day like to get the uncut episodes that I do not have and cannot get from television for season 3 and 4 before the dvds are released. There are only eight of them.

Aside from the other mistakes you mentioned, I've noticed that they seemed to have a problem with their copy of 7G04 / There's No Disgrace Like Home when they did the mastering - in many scenes of that episode the picture seems to bob up and down a bit. Has anyone else noticed this?
Well, it was technically two parts, in that they weren't contiguous. Check it out (they're marked with dollar signs instead of percent signs) on www.snpp.com/episodes/scg-1.txt . Btw, a few months ago kevin madden and I determined that it probably wasn't an oversight but a deliberate edit on the part of the producers (and that there were other versions of that scene that may or may not have been seen on tv).
Definitely. I gleaned from some season 2 reviews that they had to rely on tapes instead of the original film elements for season 1, or something like that. I suppose it's not much more than a nuisance in the big picture...
