Ok, Snake says this after he steals lotsa Moe's money. But as a high school student, I don't quite understand this joke...Does the gov't really work hard to get repaid for student loans, or is it notoriously bad in doing so? I remember seeing a cartoon in MAD magazince too that dealt with this. Any background info would be greatly appreciated.

Uhm yes, the government is not nice to you if you don't pay back your student loans. Although it sometimes takes awhile before they'll finally take action, when they do it is not fun. First they'll garnish your tax return, without warning...you'll be expecting it and then all of a sudden you find out you're not getting it. And then one day completely by surprise they'll start garnishing your wages. Once they garnish your wages, they pretty much won't stop even if you get "caught up" on them because they don't trust you to pay them on your own. This happened to a friend of mine...one day her boss just came up to her and told her that her check would be $60 short that week and every week after that. That was only a few months after she never got her $1100 tax return she was expecting.

Sort of. Student loan payments are the easiest to pay off (easy to get grace periods, low interest, and very long term... liike 20 years if you need it). But you do have to end up paying every cent of 'em. The government only helps on *subsidized* loans, and when they do contribute, it's at the time of payment. So basically, whatever your bill is at graduation, you'll have to end up paying it all off at some point, plus interest. Your parents may also get a bill depending on the specific loan they took, but you're not responsible for that in any way. My bill is a nice $25K right now...

I think a big part of the humor of that line is the idea that Snake has student loan payments. He may be a criminal but he can check the "some college" box on an application. Maybe he even earned a degree.
