The last season you'd buy

After watching some of my DVD's this week, I pondered the above question (not an original one, of course, but here we are), and I throw it out to anyone out there who cares:

Let's see, would I buy:

Season 5? Definitely.

Season 6? Of course.

Season 7? Sure.

Season 8? Hmmm, a little weakness starts to set in, but there are enough good episodes to make up for it.

Season 9? Still hanging in there, but it has similar weaknesses that started to manifest themselves in Season 8, most notably "The Principal and the Pauper" and "All Singing All Dancing," two of the most hated episodes. But I have to have "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson," don't I?

Season 10? Here's where I really start thinking. How many episodes from this season would I really want to watch? "Lisa Gets and A," I suppose. "Simpsons Bible Stories" was kind of fun. "Wild Barts Can't Be Broken" has a funny Bye-Bye Birdie parody at the end. "Homer to the Max" a few good jokes. But boy was Mike Scully really wearing out his welcome at this point. Well, I have six years to decide. Maybe stuff like "Viva Ned Flanders" and "When You Dish Upon a Star" will be funnier in 2010, but I don't know.

Season 11? Here I can easily say no. Even the "Treehouse of Horror" episode this season is pretty lame.

So, I'll go as far as season 9. Maybe season 10 if I'm in a good mood that year.

And I know most of you out there would buy the shorts, if they were to be collected all in one place. But- would you buy Tracey Ullman season sets (there were 3 seasons) if that was the only way to get them? I probably would (I stress probably), because at least I like Ullman and I thought the show, while not being a comedy classic, was generally amusing (that's damning with faint praise, isn't it?)

That is a point I didn't sufficiently consider. I suppose watching "The Principal and the Pauper" with commentary might be fun in a morbid sort of way, but a mediocre-to-lousy season like season 11? All the wry commentary in the world would still come up short for me.

I have been so disappointed in the commentaries so far that I can't imagine wanting to watch them for seasons nine and after, except for the sheer morbid fascination, as someone else said.

By the time they get around to the later seasons, who knows where public opinion will be about the show? Maybe there won't even be commentaries for every episode then.

I have no idea how many of the sets I will buy. I will snatch up the fifth, sixth, and seventh all as soon as they're released and I suppose I will eventually get the three after that, although there won't be any rush on those. As for the rest, I'm undecided. I HATED almost everything I saw of seasons eleven and twelve.

I've never heard this POV before. Season 8 is generally regarded as one of the best seasons (one of my personal favorites as well). That collection featured probably the most clever, mature stories the series has done, unbelievable character development, the clear highpoint for animation, and probably the most LOL-moments per capita until Al Jean took over again. Season 8 episodes probably took the most dicey methods of storytelling that actually worked.

Well, I did say the weakness started to set it. There are some episodes that I didn't care for that I suppose other people like such as "Homer's Enemy" (everyone likes this episode except me, I suppose), "Mountain of Madness," "A Milhouse Divided," "My Sister, My Sister," and "The Old Man and the Lisa" (one of my least favorite Mr. Burns episodes).

But yes, there are some great ones too: "You Only Move Twice," "Bart After Dark," "Lisa's Date with Density," "The Springfield Files," "The Canine Mutiny" and several others.

The upshot was, of course, that I would still buy the season without any hesitation.

The way I remember it, that was considered one of the worst ones yet when it came on. I remember it being the reason someone (Ondre Lombard?) gave up on the show.

'Homer's Enemy' would have to be one of my fav episodes but then i'm not one to care for what other people think. Season 9 onwards was all pretty much crap i'll stop buying the dvd's after season 8.

yeah, i don't know where you got that season 8 crap. i'd say the most loved were 4,5,6 and perhaps 7. 7 was the beginnings of the more outlandish plots treated less seriously.
