crescent moon!

Hey,

Can somebody explain to me the whole 'crescent moon' gag at the Play-Do factory?

There was a Play-Doh play set in the late 80s (although it was so popular that it's probably been around a while or has been reissued several times) called the "Play-Doh Fun Factory."

There's a little hand-press (or "extruder") where you can fit stencils into the front and squeeze the Play-Doh through the back with the lever, creating a long cylinder or tube of Play-Doh with the shape on the stencil- a long star-shaped wedge, or, as illustrated, a crescent-moon. The machine looks exactly like the one on the cartoon, except smaller. (Of course.) So when the foreman yells, "Crescent Moon! Crescent Moon!" it's an order to the team of workers who have to hurry to change the stencil from its previous setting to the crescent moon hole.

Well, I meant more like - what was the gag itself. I didn't catch the episode, but my friends randomly say CRESCENT MOON and find it hilarious.

It's in Days of Wine and D'ohses (BABF14), near the beginning of act three...Bart and Lisa are trying to find a good spot for their phone book cover picture, and look down on the town from Mt. Springfield (I think). They point out various places of interest, including the Play-Doh factory. Upon a closeup, we can see that instead of packaging it into the little plastic tubs for delivery, they're using the device explained earlier to squeeze it into a shape (Star first, I think) which is about as big as a log and lands on a flatbed with a boom. Then they change it to the crescent moon shape for loading to another truck.
