that seemed pretty clear to me when i saw it... they made the show before they knew who would be in the superbowl (and few people expected the falcons, btw); and this way they could just add in the appropriate information at the last minute. of course, in syndication, it winds up kind of silly...

anyway, that's my hypothesis

yah, it's easier to just dub the soundtrack than to re-draw the animation for the mouths and try to fit it in.

It's actually an in-joke based on the fact that in syndication, an earlier episode about the Super Bowl (8F12 - Lisa the Greek) had the names of the current combatants dubbed in rather than the originals (Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills).

Actually they're not dubbed in in syndication, but IIRC the same episode was rerun on Fox before the next year's Super Bowl using Dallas and Buffalo instead of Washington and Buffalo.

Nobody's pointed out the timeliness of the President and his wife topper to this run. At the time the original episode aired, as far as I recall, Clinton was in the middle of being impeached, or was very close to it. So the fact that the writers would include such an obvious "covers mouth with mug" joke for the president and his wife struck me as especially hilarious and as great political satire.

My mistake, it was the reruns on Fox (usually during Super Bowl time) and not syndication (confirmed by www.epguides.com).

it's a joke on gimmicks tv shows use to keep from becoming dated. most shows won't say mention the president by name because it'll make them look real old later on, so this was just a jab at current events being filled in in tv shows to make them look modern.
