Actually, you're probably thinking about the glasses. If you look back a few decades, people simply wore much thicker glasses. Plastics and polymer engineering were not as advanced as they are now, and it's certainly possible that the social norm at the time was to wear thicker glasses. These days, both the advanced engineering techniques and the impetus for thin glasses exist, such that thin glasses are very much the norm.

One thing is for certain...give a kid thick glasses, and they're nerds for life to some people. Never mind that glasses are a beautiful invention that help millions of people see a world many take for granted. I'm sure glad I didn't need glasses when I was a kid...there's just no getting around some stereotypes. Now we know why Paul switched to contacts in high school.

I think the only reason Milhouse is a thought of as a nerd is because of those glasses. Granted, he has other traits that aren't doing much for him in the way of popularity, but he's certainly not in the same intellectual category as Martin, "Database", etc.
