Hi,

This has probably happened to someone else. I remember eagerly watching the new episodes of the Simpsons a few years back, and thinking "that was alright", and maybe being slightly disappointed with some episodes when contrasted with "classic" episodes.

But now after the dross of recent years ("The Simpsons are going to Africa!), I've found I look back on the slightly older episodes in a better light. The episodes which I thought were "alright" at the time are SO much better than the recent ones that I would now consider them "really good".

I remember watching The Springfield Files for the first time, and really liking it, but then again not thinking it was an absolute classic. I watched it a couple of days ago, and I couldn't stop laughing. Every single bit is absolutely hilarious! The DIE/DIET thing, the philharmonic, the Red Tick beer etc... The jokes are just non-stop. There are a few other episodes I weren't too hot on such as The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons, Girly Edition, Lost Our Lisa and Lost Our Lisa (and quite a few more) that I can now watch and enjoy a lot more. I think the recent episodes have kinda lowered my expectations in an episode, and even though I've already seen them all TONS of times before I can watch them and appreciate them a lot more.

Anyone else feel the same?

I remember when I saw the episode where Marge goes to the balet with ...that women, what's her name, because Homer got his arms stuck in the vending machines. Don't know the episode name or season. But I remember thinking how unrealistic it was -how they go chasing across the desert Thelma & Louise style. There was just something out of character about it... I thought most of that season and onwards was a bit too outrageous. How tame they seem now!!!!!!!!

Ahh, I remember when that was first on too. But I think I really liked it when it was first on, it's certainly very high on my list now. "Marge, this may be hard to believe, but I'm trapped inside 2 vending machines." The whole Chief Wiggum/Homer stuff is really funny too.

To some extent, you are right. Until only a few (2-3) years ago, I'd never seen any episodes but the first 5 or 6 seasons'. Then, another network started to air "newer" episodes in heaves, and at first I thought "WTF!? Everything is fucked out and completely unfunny! And where're the intelligent references? What idiots wrote this?" etc.

Now we've completed season 10 & 11, and watching these episodes I consider the ep.s from season 7-9 as classic as the earliest (even though I still like the very first episodes (season 1-3) best).

It probably has to do with the standard being lowered so gradually that it is virtually un-detectible if you don't get any reference from what it used to be like (just like the educational system). But when you watch two episodes, one from the early seasons, and one from the latest seasons, back to back, though, the contrast is much clearer.

I'm a bit surprised at how many of you out there think the first couple seasons are the best. I have been watching since the day 1, and I don't think the show hit its peak till season 4 and didn't started declining until season 10. I also surprised that so many of you hate the last couple of seasons. I think there have many great moments in the last couple seasons and I can't wait for the new season.

The Simpsons is still the best show on TV.

I'm more or less with the 4-10 peak (I'd probably say 3-10 though), but I think the only episode I really thought was good lately was the "Trilogy Of Error" episode. The episodes have mostly been watchable, but there was some absolute dross, Simpsons Safari for one.

I dunno if "I'm Alan Partridge" has been on in the US yet, but I would rate that head and tails above the latest simpsons episodes. There are only 6 episodes, each one being an absolute classic. There's a big difference between 250+ episodes of the Simpsons compared to 6 episodes of I'm Alan Partridge, and I think it shows. The quality is inevitably going to vary between 250 episodes, but the margins are a lot smaller with 6.

It sure is, even a "bad" Simpsons ep is better than anything else that's ever on. And I don't *hate* the last couple of seasons. Those eps are still worth watching, they're just not classics. But they might grow on me.

Obviously you haven't seen "Three Sisters."

(In the hope that nobody construes the previous as endorsement of "Three Sisters," I will now state for the record that the aforementioned statement is to be read aloud in a sarcastic tone, a la the CBG.) ________________________________________________________________

Remember what happened after "Natural Born Kissers" aired for the first time at the end of season 9? People wrote (even in the capsule) that the sexual topic and references went too far and that the stuff with Homer and Marge naked was too offensive.

How harmless if you compare it with todays stuff. "Natural Born Kissers" is IMO one of the last truly good episodes as it merged the sexually "offensive" story with a good emotional story - and thats a rarity for late season 9.
