Mission: Impossible 2 - Homer's climb up the human pyramid mimics Ethan Hunt's desert mountain climbing, right down to the famous "facing outward, arms outstretched" pose (made so famous by innumerable commercials, music videos, and trailers featuring that shot of Tom Cruise.)

I noticed that, too. There was also a moment where Homer is climbing, then briefly stops and dangles his right arm. For some reason, this reminded me of King Kong climbing the Empire State Building. Does anyone know if Kong made a similar move? I might just be imagining it, though. Thanks.

During the scene where Tom Cruise hangs in that pose, a tribal sounding melody, complete with bongos and such, plays. A similar sounding song plays when Homer hangs in the same pose, so yes, in that sence, it was Mission Impossible-y. Then again, if you're talking about the other scenes, that music was from Miami Vice.
THAT'S what it was. I knew it was a musical cue from that movie.
Also, to answer another post, the "hanging by one arm" thing was also from M:I2. I think that was the first thing that tipped us off, and then the famous pose and the music was the clincher.
