Anyone else watch Alley McBeal? I had no idea who Dam Edna was, but after watching the last couple weeks, my brother told me he was on. He (she/it) played the big overdramatic lady who was the named plaintiff in the suit against the phone companies. It's funny since my first impression when I saw that character was "She looks like Mrs. Doubtfire." But I really thought it was a woman.

Turns out that this is Dame Edna's whole thing--he's a drag queen. Although in this instance, we were supposed to think he really was a woman (which I did).

So you can imagine I thought of Moe when I found out who Dam Edna actually was.

The actor is Barry Humphries, who portrayed an Australian yob Barry McKenzie in a couple of movies in the seventies (Adventures of Barry mcKenzie and Barry McKenzie Holds His Own), famous for depicting the numerous ways drunks can throw up.

Dame Edna was just one of a series of characters, but she grew on people I guess, and turned into a whole career for him. His/her most famous schtick early on was eating "Nivea Cremes" supposed to be chocolates, except that Nivea is/was a British (and presumably Australian) hand cream.

OK< more than you *ever* wanted to know, but there you go.
