The Cyrillic on the hockey stick, which read ������ (you'll need to read this in KOI-R encoding), did indeed say Kozlov, the name of the Russian hockey player in the episode.

Errors: Why would everybody hate hockey? They all enjoyed it in "Lisa on Ice".

I guess the Simpsons (and everyone else in the town, it seems) just preferred football and they were disappointed to find out that a different game was being played.
