META HUMOR ALERT: Homer throwing a pie at Krusty because his show's material has been deteriorating in recent years is a crack at how many Simpsons fans felt that show's material has been going downhill in recent years (specifically in the Mike Scully era). To me, considering the episodes that aired this season, I agree with those fans.

I don't think you need a reference for that.

When I was a kid, it was clear that Superman, and maybe some of the other superheroes, were wearing their underwear on the outside. It never made sense, but there it was.

So when I threw together a Superman costume, of course you put some underwear on as the outer layer. That's what the superheroes were doing. Unfortunately, it looks really lame when the only underwear you have is white.

To me, his costume came right from the same thing. Homer knew superheroes wore underwear on the outside, and just like the rest of us, only happened to have white underwear to do this with.

Lisa intoduces the Dalai Lama as "the lean, serene chanting machine" - then the Dalai Lama walks on stage as horn music plays...

Possibly a reference to the 70's TV show/talent competition "The Gong Show". There was a recurring bit where someone called "Gene Gene The Dancing Machine" would enter on stage and (similar sounding) horn music was played. (Although what was being played in the "Simple Simpson" scene sounded very similar to "The Price is Right" melody/theme.)

I figured it was a take on "the lean mean fighting machine". I think that's a reference to the US Marines, but I'm not sure. It is a term that seems to have been around long enough that it's origins might be clouded.

It is a good take. The Dalai Lama is for non-violence, so he couldn't be a "fighting machine" yet there is still power without fighting.

I once walked from Montreal to New York City, a walk originated by Buddhist monks from Japan. They were "lean mean changing machines" since we were walking everywhere, and they were chanting every step of the way. One day in Vermont, we weren't walking, so I went strolling through the small town (the name escapes me) and one of the monks was going to the general store. And yes indeed, he had his fan drum and he was chanting as he walked.

In fact, the music sounds like a remix of the song "See see rider" (originally wrote by Janis Joplin, I think) by Elvis Presley ! This music was heard every time the King enters and leaves the stage ("Elvis left the building") !

It was actually written in the 20s by Ma Rainey and redone in the 50s and 60s by just about everybody.

That's what I thought, but when I pulled the album out, the song is credited to James Gurley. I couldn't be bothered putting the record on and listening to it, so I wasn't sure why he got credit for it.

Hrm. Which album is this? James Gurley did write a song called "Easy Rider" for Big Brother's debut album. This is a similar, but decidedly different song.
