I know he is based on Ted Kennedy but his voice resembles that of John F. Kennedy.

I have no answer ... but once they did a brief bit with JFK (obviously a voice actor) and he sounded exactly -- I mean EXACTLY -- like Quimby.

That was in [2F07] Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy, and it was a *brilliant* piece of work on Dan Castellaneta's part, I think. Young Homer is watching JFK talking on the television, and then he goes into the kitchen and pretends to be Jack Kennedy for his mother.

Castelleneta, who does Quimby's voice, also did JFK's, then did Homer, as a child, as JFK. It was like a triple voice-acting bit, and it was quite convincing.

Castellaneta has always done Quimby as his best JFK impersonation.

The capsule doesn't specify, but I would imagine that he did. It sounds like him. I think that the line is "Ich bin eine Berliner", but my German is non-existent.

Eine implies that Berliner is feminine, because Berliner is the only noun that would need an indefinite article. "Ich," meaning "I" (first person singular) is a noun as well, but you wouldn't say "the I am a person from Berlin," in English or in German. "The" is implied.

"Ech hine Berliner" is close, but I'm sure it isn't the exact quote. After all, isn't the speaker trying to inform everybody that "I am a jelly donut"?

Well... "eine Berlinner" (feminine) does mean "jelly donut" or "jam pastry," whereas "ein Berliner" (male) would mean "I am a man from Berlin," but nobody in Germany would have thought of it that way- they'd know what he was trying to say, just like someone who speaks English fluently would understand that a person saying, in "poorer" English while gesturing to a chair, "Would you please to have the seat" probably means "Please sit down," rather than "would you like to own this chair?"

Similarly, when someone says "Oh, I'm a big fan of the Flaming Lips," you wouldn't scream back, "Ha ha ha ha! You just said you're a large wind moving device that belongs to a band!!" Context lets you know what they mean by "fan." It's a little harder to come up with a perfect parallel example in English, because we don't have gender cases for words. But you know what I'm getting at.

Well put. You'd make a good language teacher.

   What I failed to mention in my earlier post was that I'm betting that the
Simpson's writers had Quimby say "Ich bin ein Berliner" just as Kennedy did 40
years ago as a pun on the controversy over whether the line translates into "I
am a jelly donut".
   The controversy is really a tempest in a teapot, as what Kennedy said (in
German) was correct.

That's very odd, because a friend of mine (who's German) claimed that, whilst *technically* correct - Kennedy's remark did amuse the Berlin public. Unless, of course, she was taken in by the urban legend herself......

The one where he recites the poem about a trout? That wasn't bad... though hardly subtle. Mind you, that was part of the whole "Joe Pesci Show" sketches, where everything rapidly degenerates into viscious beatings. A man being beaten with a rubber basebat bat for three minutes gets old pretty fast.
