Bizarrest censorship ever?

Last night, Star India broadcast "Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy." They only censored one word in the whole episode, and it's not the one you'd probably expect. When Dr. Hibbert is about to imbibe the tonic, he comments that the apparent effect is due to minor poisoning due to the unsanitary conditions in Grampa's bathtub. And in the broadcast, they cut the word "bathtub" from the soundtrack (although you can still see Dr. Hibbert mouthing it). Is that bizarre or what?

That is pretty strange, are you sure it was intentional?

On the topic of bizarre censorship ... I was baffled to note that when Courtney Love read out Kurt's suicide note, she refered to him as an "asshole" for doing what he did -- the broadcast I saw beeped the word "hole" but not the word "ass". Go figure.

They do that a lot...also they bleep out "God," not "damn," in "Goddamn"...

I'm gonna go dig a *beep*! I worship *beep*! All censorship is facism, methinks. It's not like little kids are gonna be watching, IMO.

They didn't want her promoting her band.

This makes sense to me. Calling him a "hole" wouldn't make sense. Calling him an "ass" is in the same generation as calling him an "asshole", but milder. So, it seems to me that the censor softened her comment without destroying the meaning. Does that make sense to anyone but me? David

I see your point, but the whole concept still seems dumb to me.

When "Happy Days" first aired you couldn't say, "dick" on TV, yet they said "dork". In my neck of the woods, those two words were completely synonymous.

In mine, one usually meant a body part and the other always meant a person. "dick" was a swear word and "dork" was slang. I think that applied even if they were both used to describe a person.

person.

I guess that's why it was allowable.

But here's a weird one. When "The Sunshine Boys" was aired (late '80s??), they bleeped "putz". Putz was used to indicate a stupid person, but since it also meant "penis" it was bleeped....even though it's Yiddish, for crying out glavin!

KatijaikatR H Menzel

glavin!

I had an elementary school teacher who freaked out similarly over "schmuck," but I guess "schmuck" is a stronger word than "putz" anyway.

That's gotta be his own peccadillo! "Schmuck" is just a doofus. It has no other meaning that I know of. "Putz" was usually used to describe a doofus, and "shwanz" was the penis.

Well, she spoke Yiddish and read us the riot act. I bet there's lots of slang words for "penis."

I could be wrong, but isn't "schmuck" the word for the removed piece of foreskin after circumcision?

Yes, you are wrong. "Schmuck" is Yiddish for "penis." (Whether it is related etymologically to the German word "Schmuck" meaning "jewelry" is a question I leave for greater minds than mine.)

Wow! I've lived in New York City for all my life, and this is the first time I heard "shmuck" means penis. And, I did know a girl named Schmuck. She would have been teased worse if they knew the original meaning of "shmuck".

As I said, the original meaning of the work "schmuck" (which is its meaning in German) is "jewelry," which is presumably where your friend's family got its name.

As for the meaning of "Schmuck," consider the following joke from Leo Rosten's _The Joys of Yiddish_:

A man is feeling ignored and inadequate, and goes to a psychiatrist for advice. The psychiatrist advises him to buy a camel and ride up and down the street on the camel. That way, he'll be noticed and the center of attention. So the guy buys a camel and rides it up and down the street every day.

One day, he stopped at the grocery to make some purchases, and tied up his camel outside. But when he left the store, his camel was gone -- stolen!

He went to the police station. "I'd like to report a stolen camel."

"What color was your camel?" asked the policeman.

"What kind of a question is that? Camel-colored!"

The policeman asked, "Was the camel male or female?"

"How should I know that?? . . . wait a minute -- it was male. Definitely male."

"Just a minute ago, you didn't know. How can you be so sure that it was male?"

"Well, every day I would ride up and down the street on it. And I would hear people saying, 'Look at the schmuck on that camel!'"
