The joke pretty much got played out when Bart went into Moe's Tavern to retreive an inebriated Homer Simpson.

(paraphrased) Moe: Hey, I recognize that voice...it's YOU, Bart Simpson! I bet you get into trouble all the time. Bart: Well, I have been making a few prank phone calls.

Besides after "Amada Hunginkiss" the names went down hill. Credit the writers for not beating a dead horse.

Flaming Moe was from season 3. There were many more prank calls to Moe's Tavern after that...

Ooops... I meant to write there have been about 15 prank calls in the series, which is slightly more than one per season, which I take to imply that they could have more in the future.

There may be only 16, but the last actual "Bart calls Moe" was the "Ivana Tinkle" gag at the end of "New Kid on the Block" (the Laura Powers episode), which was in Season 4. (The four since then: Moe calls the roll in Bart's class (Season 6), Mr. Burns calls and asks for Wayland Smithers, and Moe thinks it's a prank (Season 7), Homer calls for Eura Snotball (also Season 7), and then none until the current season when Bart calls Homer while he's taking Moe's place.)

It's a comment on society. Prank calls aren't as thrillling for kids as they used to be, anyway.

The reason is that all of Bart's "prank calls" were being taken out of a book which featured a collection of them. Once this was made public, they stopped putting them in the Simpsons; don't know if it was a copyright issue, or the shame of "stealing" jokes that made it stop...

I've heard of it being based on a little know bootleg recording that went around called "The Tube Bar Tapes". What it was was a series of prank phone calls that two people (a.k.a. The Bar Bum Bastards) have made to an New Jersey bar called "The Tube Bar", mostly to the owner of the establishment, "Red".

The records had been considered "Public Dormain" for many years, and had been duplicated on a number of formats, including LPs, cassettes and CDs. There's an official release quite recently taken from the original masters, but I don't think it had anything to do with the Simpsons crank calls otherwise. I hear that was mostly due to the writers getting tired of coming up with new names to use.
