Seems our new $1.9 Billion monorail (called "AirTrain") derailed and killed it's conductor on it's maiden trip.
Wonder if Lyle Lanley had anything to do with it.

All the people around here (Seattle) who want to expand our monorail to ease our transportation woes should read this story or at least watch that episode of the Simpsons again. Everytime there's something on the local news about monorail vs. light rail I start quietly chanting monorail...monorail...monorail...monorail...The main proponent of the system here even reminds of a little Lyle Lanley.
Prediction - Seattle will never get a monorail any bigger than the one that's already here.

Being a seattle native, now living in Green Bay, I remember the debate on the 1.3 mile monorail... making it go from Sea-Tac airport, and even as far north as Everett, Wa.. but the debate has been going on for decades. What ever happened to the monorail plan in teh Sound Transit proposal, all we got out of that is more busses that clog up more streets... There is so much lobbying the news from both sides it's hard to tell who's right wrong or just dumb. Right now the plan is to extend the current system up north through Ballard towards Everett and go down south and over to West Seattle. The light rail system has similiar plans, of course both plans seem to skip the airport which to me is an absolutley logical stop for any mass transit system.
The monorail foks say they'll see 69000 riders a day, that's twice as much as the current bus routes for the same area see a day. The company that did the estimates has screwed over at least 10 toll roads in Florida with their overly high estimates. They factored in special event and tourism traffic as if it were everyday traffic, when that would mostly occur on weekends and should not be a part of everyday commuter usage estimes. And my favorite is the idea to NOT honor any other transit pass on the new monorail. Why would anyone pay bus fare to get to a monorail station, only to pay monorail fare on top of it to finish their trip, when they could just stay on the bus?
Meanwhile, as mentioned in another post the current monorail has broken down twice lately and people had to be evacuated.
When life imitates art like this I just have to smile and chant monorail...monorail...monorail.
