Doesn't it seem like "The Simpsons" is becoming everything it ever made fun of? The show was great for the first four seasons and it's been coasting ever since.

Hold it, professor. One bad example does not constitute "a whole host of other crap". IMO, ten examples would make a whole host, or at the VERY least, TWO examples.

* these precede "Homer Vs Dignity", but which I retroactively deem just about as bad. So it's a whole host of other crap, some of which was contemporaneous and most of which came after.

Example: Bart is reading a "Mad" feature entitled something like "A Mad Look at Hippies." Bart says, sincerely, "Wow, those Mad guys aren't afraid whose toes they step on". But the entire point of the joke is that Mad magazine has become so lame that it's still satirizing 30 year social trends.

A few seasons later, "The Simpsons" has an episode in which Homer becomes a hippie.

Well, in one episode, Bart got his "Mad Magazine Special Edition - there's only about 18 of these a year". And in the magazine, they were making fun of Spiro Agnew. By your logic, a few seasons later, Homer should have become Spiro Agnew.
