For any unenlightened american out there the currency in great britain is the great british pound (GBP) symbol: ï¿½. I suppose a transaltion to american english would be "Who controls the british dolar"

It may be that some Europeans think that Americans are severely nationaly-centric, that we are ignorant of the diversity of cultures and systems in the rest of the world, that is in fact not true.

I believe the post you were replying to was a joke. A play on words. Kind of like, 'My dog has no nose.' 'How does it smell?' 'Awful!'

I'm familiar with the British Pound, but what's so great about it? Until today I always thought it was just the pound or that funny L symbol.

True story: earlier today I was looking for something on ebay and I saw that the currency was GBP: my first reaction was that it probably costs too much to get something shipped from Germany.

(Hey, I didn't say it was a good story, I just said it was true.)

It's called the "Great British Pound" because the full title of our country(s) is Great Britain. Britain is short for Great Britain and consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The British Isles consists of all the little islands around Britain (including all of Ireland).

You are wrong. Great Britain does not include N. Ireland.

England: It is the southern part of Great Britain. Wales, Scotland, and Ireland are not part of England - a division of United Kingdom.

Great Britain: It is the politic entity of the main island. It includes England, Wales, and Scotland

United Kingdom: It is England, Wales, Scotland, and N. Ireland, that in approx. 1801 joined together to form a union - called United Kingdom.

You can extend this one more to British Isles: a geographic description which includes the 'Isle of Man' (a separate political entity again), and possibly the Channel Islands, but not sure about that... Anyone ?
