This is from a Canadian newspaper and is worth sharing.......

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his broadcast.

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America!

This was first broadcast in 1973. Gordon Sinclair. CFRB, Toronto. http://www.phillytalkradioonline.com/comment/usa.html has audio of it, I'm sure other sites have it as well.

It's as true as it was in '73, though.

Gord Sinclair, Jr is here in Montreal at CJAD. I'm pretty certain he isn't the author, because he was running a radio station here in Montreal back in the early seventies. While I've been watching TV rather than listen to the radio the past few days, so maybe I missed something, I haven't seen anything locally about this old message being passed around on the internet. I wonder if the son, who is getting on in years now, is aware of it.

When I first heard about the decision that international flights wouldn't be redirected to canada, my thoughts were "good... no point putting them in the line of fire." We had determined which planes were hijacked and no international flights were on the list.

I like canada and don't wan't them involved in this nastiness.

All international flights *were* redirected to Canada, 34 flights from Asia landed in Vancouver, dozens landed in Gander, Nfld.

In fact, the flights that landed in Vancouver are still sitting on the tarmac right now.

Original text here: http://www.rcc.ryerson.ca/ccf/news/unique/am_text.html Includes an audio link--the speech was released as a 45rpm single (anybody remember those?) way back then, too.
SportsNutCAndersen (Kimba)

The editorial/speech was recorded by three artists under the title of "Americans".....

Byron MacGregor (who?????) recorded it, and it actually reached #4 on Billboard and went gold.

Gordon Sinclair recorded the original, also charted across North America

Tex Ritter recorded the third version, it also charted (low).

All three 45's, and an album version by Ritter, were released in 1974.

To put this piece in context, Sinclair (may he RIP) was a well-known Canadian personality who railed against the then-anti-American feelings prevalent in Canada. At the time, tensions were high between Canada and the US, some of it based on Canadians' mistrust of American policies under Nixon (no surprise there), but most of the tension was created by the American government's refusal to deal with the then Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, who Nixon and others thought was an asshole on the best of days.

IIRC, Sinclair's piece was seen as an oddity by most Canadaians, a bit too right-wing for the times.

It actually has more currency in 2001 for Canadians, and it is more than appropriate to recall it for these times of shared horror and sorrow between ourselves and our dear friends to the south.

Thus ending the war, saving countless lives...

The Americans did not invade those countries. They helped defend them from international bullies. Millions of people can now live safe, free, productive lives in South Korea, only because the US helped them when they needed it. If they hadn't, the people there would be in just as much trouble as the North Koreans.

The Kosovars asked. They begged, in fact - and only the Americans and British helped them. Their entire race might not even exist anymore if they hadn't.

Americans also invented fuel cells. In thirty years most of their cars will run on hydrogen.

They can spend their own money however them damn well choose.

How else can I take it? You obviously don't like Americans, and it is only because they are rich. Every country has a history, some of it bad, but the US's is far more good than bad. But every mistake they've made is scruitinized simply because they are the wealthiest... well let me tell you something. They are the richest because they work the hardest, and for no other reason. Every country that is upset about its economic situation need only look at how they run things, not at what the US has done to them. And if your country has had recent conflict with the States, it is because you have done something terrible to someone else.

You don't like Americans. How pathetic.

Our action in each instance was responsive to the aggressions of others. To claim that America "regularly invades countries" is ludicrious. "Regularly invades countries?" Are you kidding? Please substantiate this a little better so I have more ammo to work with. Oh, and our humanitarian aid to Somalia in the '90's was all about economical and political interests too, wasn't it? There's just so much in Somalia that we want both economically or politically.

This is true, but my guess is because it's available. Do you think any other nationality wouldn't do the same thing if they could? Heck, people from other nationalities immigrate to the U.S. just so they can prosper. This is an inane comment that shows a fundamental lack of human nature. C'mon dude - think a little.

Oh no, keep going. You're really on a roll Marek. You've done such a great job so far. If you have more ridiculous comments, please post them and we'll see how they stack up.

Actually, your focus on the fact that the moon is pretty much a big orbital rock with lots of little rocks indicates you know as much about this issue as all of your other points. You say, "please don't come up with...." Dude, you're the one who's "come up with" the horse-shit answers. Oh, and your smug little comment "congratulations" on an achievement of that magnitude must mean you've had much greater achievements in your lifetime. Please elaborate so we can be awed by you.

This point actually has some truth to it - but it doesn't support your previous point like you think it does.

True - everything does have 2 sides Marek. However, some of the "other side" you've been mentioning about America is not very soundly reasoned - and are arguments advanced by people who have a lower understanding of the issues.

Amazingly, you find fault in a nation that tipped the balance in a World War TWICE with resources, effort, blood, sweat, tears and toil (apologies to Winston Churchill for those last 5 words) - and then forgave their debts after contributing to their liberation. That's disgraceful - do you even realize what you're saying? You should be ashamed of yourself Marek.

"Reach",

That's an appropriate name for you because this post is definitely a "reach."

Hey, I was most definitely *NOT* aiming to demean the Russian contributions in World War II. In fact, in one of my recent posts - I expressed profound regret that they lost 20 million lives in that war. The Nazis also were much harsher on Russians than Westerners - because they looked at Russians as "sub-humans".

As such, I do not belittle their suffering or contributions - and I would recommend to you to not look at a compliment to American contributions as a slap any and everywhere else. All I said was the American contribution tipped the balance. I believe it did.

Next point. "Crumbling Western Front" my ass. Do you know what the Atlantic Wall was? "Matter of time"? You kiddin'? Dude, you can make a point to advance a cause but you should not belittle the efforts of the U.S. and the British in World War II.

The Americans designed and developed the P-51 Mustang Fighter itself - the best performing fighter pilot of WWII including the jet propelled fighters which were not effectively flown until after the war; it was the Americans' industrial might that fueled an unprecedented amount of weaponry and material support that far exceeded Russia's; the Americans fought daylight bomber raids used in conjunction with the British night raids putting Nazy Germany under constant bombing pressure 24/7; and the Americans - through a coordinated effort of international scientists were the only nation to have developed the atomic bomb that closed the show in the Pacific theatre.

The Brits along with preliminary contributions by the Poles cracked Enigma - and read German intelligence at the highest levels; the British were ingenius and pioneered enumerous espionage activities, tactics and special forces; the Brits were the pioneers in RADAR development and to take maximum advantage; and the Brits developed the Merlin Rolls Royce engine that enabled the P-51 Mustang Fighter to have the range and performance to escort bombers over Germany during daylight raids.

There's so much more to this story (obviously) - but you should not confuse a statement crediting American involvement with one belittling Russian involvement.

Oh, and though I have great respect for the Russian people and their soldiers/sailors, much of what Russia gained technologically from that era was "stolen" intellectual material by spys. When Truman indicated to Stalin at the Yaltsa Conferences that the Americans had detonated a Super Weapon, Stalin wasn't even surprised. Truman took this to mean Stalin failed to appreciate the weapon's significance - but the truth is Stalin sources filled him in on it. Prior to that, Russian spies also knew that Western sources had cracked both German and Japanese Codes. The fact is much of Russian war-time technology is "copy-catted" from the West by spies. Since you seem to have an interest in this subject matter, I suspect you might be aware of this.

Again, I'm not demeaning the efforts of the Russian soldier, the Russian sailor, the Russian officer or the Russian civilian - no way. The Russians fought their hearts out and lost far too many lives - but I'd suggest you need to also understand the value of Western contributions too.

Take care.

I'm aware of the firestorms created by the Dresden bombing. Dude, I don't know what to say to you here. I've never maintained that massive civilian bombing was a wonderful contribution to humanity. Rather, that the sacrificial efforts of U.S. and British (and other noted nations too) servicemen were key components to defeating the Axis powers.

special

Well, you're right - many people do say words to that effect, and on this point - I'm in total agreement with you. I too cringe when I hear people act like we won WWII all by ourselves. It's embarassing and a very unenlightened perspective. One key point: I've never heard a U.S. serviceman from that era (or any person from that era) ever once make those statements - it's usually people much younger who've never even fought in a war or even been in the military. Like I said, it's embarassing.

Just for clarification, I did not say the U.S. won WWII all by itself. I stated we may have tipped the balance. By analogy, a kicker who boots an extra point in a game tied at 27-27 tips the balance - but does it mean he won the game by itself?

Everyone has various forms of intelligence - but you're amiss here. No nation profited more than the Russians did in obtaining Western intelligence and military secrets. You vociferously contend that differences in degree should be recognized and I appreciated (and I agree with you) - and then in the same thread claim it's important to overlook those distinctions. Consider how hypocritical this is.

you

Please indicate you understand how complicated it is, because I don't feel particularly informed after reading your posts. Even here I ask that you "also understand the value of Western contributions in WWII too" - and you respond "Never wanted and never will be" before going onto how you detest "blind patriotism".

Pause and take 30 seconds and think about that.

You might want to take another 60 seconds if you still haven't identified a problem with that.

See if you can determine how *contradicting* these statements are.

They also make your statements that you seek to "inform" people and how you understand how "complicated WWII" utterly laughable.

There is arrogance everywhere. It's not worth murdering people.

You may criticize the government, and so do we. There is no perfect government or system in the world. There never will be. However, I'm very happy to live in a country where citizens can even get away with being huge jerks and not be thrown in jail or executed. As you said, everything has two sides. That means there is also the opportunity for great kindness in America, and you're seeing that on CNN right now for example.

You may criticize individuals, but that just shows how ignorant you are. Unless you know me personally, there is no way you could sum up what's in my heart and mind.

I represent myself. If others choose to follow that example, or if they echo my sentiments, I can't help that. I'd like a detailed, personal explanation of why I'm a dumbass. I expect names, dates, and other details about my personal life. I've yet to meet someone who's made a correct snap judgement about me.

I would offer a line-by-line rebuttal, but that wouldn't change your mind. You obviously don't 'love America'. My only words for you are "piss off jackass".

As a final step.

"Size" as in "weight", or "size" as in "dishonesty"? I don't want to talk politics with you. It's time for reverence now, even as our anger calms a bit.

Marek, Marek, Marek. You are quite lucky to be so free with your words. I sincerely hope that your freedom of speech is protected by the U.S.A., because if you had spit out this worthless drivel against your adopted homeland in most other countries, you'd be in serious trouble. You're an imbecile. Your ignorance and pathetic message is so out of line and untimely that I sincerely feel sorry for you. Go read a book, take a walk, or do something that will allow you to pull your head out of your ass, you sorry, sorry soul. dignan

Like most small-minded, ignorant people who like to think of themselves as knowledgeable, you have let your feelings and biased opinions influence your representation of the "truth". No country is perfect but no other country in the history of this world has done more good for the ENTIRE human race than the United States of America. We may not always get it right but we always stand for good. I don't have the words to express my strong feelings for my country and my strong feelings AGAINST people like you. I beg you, please leave my country for a country more in line with your way of thinking. I think I'll stay and continue defending the American way of life. God bless America.

So there are shades of grey. Big deal. The USA is still on the moral high ground. The essay at the bottom of this posting is about 25 years old. A lot has happened since then. Mainly we went bankrupt paying for too many weapons and our economic rivals caught up with us. While our military rival, the former USSR, went out of business for the same reasons.

We invaded Vietnam and Korea to thwart the USSR. And prop up American economic interests. In Vietnam, we happened to back a corrupt Facist dictator, and we lost. In Korea things turned out much better. In Kuwait we were just slapping around Sadam Hussein, who used to be our fair haired boy in that part of the world, before he got too big for his britches.

Alan Shepard, one of my dad's classmates at the Naval Academy, played golf on the moon.

Yes. The USSR and Communist China have their own track records of shame. In countries like Romania, Albania, North Korea, and Cambodia. And both the USA and the USSR are guilty of mistreating countries like Cuba and Vietnam.

No kidding. Clinton is 100 times the President and the man that GWB NEVER WILL BE.

Your English is much better than what I see in alt.fan.rush.limbaugh. Don't have a cow, man. It is a free country, you can say whatever you want, and we can disagree with you for the most trivial of reasons.

This is an old thing from the mid 1970s. In the intervening years we have struggled with oil prices, inflation, deflation, foreign economic competition, and Ronald Reagan's debt.

This was originally written before the Airbus Consortium was started, and before the Concorde was built.

In the intervening years the Japanese and Germans have used their micro-economic policies to catch up with us in terms of production and quality, but have also used their macro-economic policies to remain mired behind us.

So, this was written in 1973, when I was a senior in high school. Some of what it says is not true today. Except the part about American generosity. That part is still true.
