There are two half-hour episodes today, rather than an hour-long one.
And no, that's never happened before. The closest they ever came was "Who Shot Mr. Burns?", and even that's considered two different episodes.

That might be because people who record the show on TiVo and who add padding (in other words, "start one minute early" or "end one minute late") lose the second episode if they are listed separately (because TiVo thinks, "The first episode ends at 8:31 and the second one starts at 8:29 - they're the same show, so when there's overlap, record the first one and ignore the second one").

I kind of wonder why there never has been an hour-long Simpsons. Would it really be that difficult to make? I know there have been other episodes with premises that could easily have been stretched out over an hour.
