Did anyone else besides me notice the blatant shot at Butterfinger candy bars? "Not even fire will accept them." Normally this would just be another insult (e.g. "I'm so hungry I could eat at Arby's"), but "The Simpsons" still has that huge deal with Butterfinger, correct?

Not quite, from the Arby's website (yes, I looked it up because this sounded to much like one of those urban myths that sounds reasonable so people believe it):

The only kink in the chain's orderly development came with choosing a name for it. The partners wanted to use the name "Big Tex," but were unsuccessful in negotiating with the Akron businessman who was already using the name. So, in the words of Forrest, "We came up with Arby's, whichstands for R.B., the initials of Raffel Brothers, although I guess customers might think the initials stand for roast beef."

First of all: how old are you? Ok, forget I asked. Anyway, they probably realized later that it could also stand for roast beef and they have intentionally tried to confuse people ever since.

I've got no problem with the explanation, but the commercial in question was out in the early to mid 80's. People then probably assumed that "ARBY'S" was just an onomatopoeic spelling of "RB's"

Oh, that commercial was from the 80's? Ok, well I guess that doesn't necessarily mean you are too old. I thought it was from the 70's. The only commercials that have stuck in my head from the 80's are the silly Wendy's commercials.

Anyway, it is an onomatopoeic spelling of RB's, it just apparently doesn't stand for Roast Beef. Although I agree that's a perfectly reasonable assumption if you don't know otherwise (and who would).

Oh...merchandising. You know I consider myself a hard-core fan, yet the only Simpson's paraphenalia (yikes, spelling anyone?)I own is that cool poster with all of the characters on it. I don't really think Simpsons t-shirts are cool, or all that hot of a comodity anymore. Or are they? What do you guys/girls think?
