Group has the authority to view the history of all activities in the group, approve new members and messages (if new members or messages must be approved), the right to change the visual "look" of the group, change the description of the group as appears in the Yahoo! Groups directory, decide in what category the group shalll be located, and decide whether there will be full, limited, or no access to the web features (files, database, etc.). The owner also has the authority to invite new members, ban members from the group, set whether there is a spamguard in the group and to delete unwanted posts, files, photos, etc. It is really not a lot of work, from my personal experience. I would be willing to do the initial setup of the group, and then the owner would take it from there. Moderators, for the record, can have almost all of the same privledges as the owner, but the owner has the right to limit those privledges.
If this group is started, then I will invite all of the responsible posters from the past while from alt.tv.simpsons, and I will make Mark Allen Adams, Jr. the owner of the group if he so desires.

As I said, it's easy to set up filters, and is easy to ignore what you don't like. Leaving this forum to go to a newsgroup is exactly what the trolls want you to do.
But if you want to set up a Yahoo newsgroup, best of luck to you. I'm guessing, though, that most of the posters here aren't like the wusses from alt.tv.game-shows -- they totally abandoned their newsgroup and let the trolls take over.

On the contrary, I would suggest the trolls want you to stay, so they can continue to cause you inconvenience. Look, these are the same drips that ruined alt.tv.game-shows. Pretty much that entire community moved to Invision, or some such board service some time ago. The trolls have finally realized no one's reading their garbage in that group anymore which is why they've branched out to ats, rec.arts.tv, and others.

I don't want to spell anything out here and give this person more ideas of how to get around filters, but play around with your filters and you can get rid of most of the troll posts.
The biggest problem is that people insist on complaining about the troll(s) and this is exactly what they're looking for. You'll notice that as people have begun commenting/complaining about them, it has encouraged them and they've started being more aggressive. If you feed them, they'll get worse. Ignore them, and they'll go away.
This is my last post on this subject, since I'm doing exactly what I'm advising against -- feeding the trolls. For those of you who truly can't stand it -- stop complaining and go to one of the Yahoo groups. Continuing to complain about it will only make it worse for the rest of us who are sticking around.

Moderated newsgroups won't stop dedicated trolls, however. Because of usenet's design, only some very elementary trickery is needed to post to moderated newsgroups without the moderator's approval.

Someone posted on this thread that "they don't have the time" to set up filters and suggested going to a "Yahoo!" group. I would think that once you have the filter process set-up, it wouldn't take too much time to update a name base.

To use a newsreader other than Google on the internet, you need access to a news server (most ISPs provide you with one, or you can get a pay news account from um...teranews? easynews? I don't know anymore) and then you need a news client. Outlook Express does usenet and for discussions it's ok. I suggest Xnews. There are tons and tons of them out there. Try googling for news readers or some such.
Setting up filters really doesn't take any time unless you don't know how to do it. I don't really think you can killfile people using Google news...but I only use it for searching for old posts so I don't know. With Outlook Express, it's as easy as selecting the message then going to Message, then Block Sender... and all the trolls are gone.
I use a free newsgroup server, news.individual.net, and it works perfectly with this group.
