my take on the simpsons movie

I want you to take three steps back and just think about what you're saying!

I truly believe that at some point in the distant future, media- anthropologists will look back upon our popular culture and The Simpsons as one of the driving forces that moved our popular culture in a positive direction, for TWO CENTURIES--the last half of the 20th and whatever point they stop in the 21st. "Homer-fication" was just the next evolutionary period that had to occur to move the story-line beyond Bart-centric concepts of nihilism and existential angst prevalent at that time.

My hope is that The Simpsons continues to evolve into ever-more complex plots and story-lines that foretell and instruct us in all things human.

perhaps you are correct that the homer move had to occur, in which case the show did as well as it could. nevertheless, imo it resulted in a show that, while still good, was no longer great.

and about the context of nihilism/angst of the early 90s: i didn't like many manifestations of it, but it did produce some good art. i'll take the best rock music of that era (nirvana, soundgarden) over anything that has come since, and i think the simpsons of that era spawned better offspring (beavis and butthead, early south park) then the homer era has ( family guy? ew).

but yes, creative periods like that are usually by their nature short- lived, which raises the "had to" comment you made. It is noteworthy that the simpsons has outlived its founding early 90s era and no other cultural product of the times that comes to mind has.

As someone who loved Homer more than any other character and hated Bart from the beginning, I didn't mind the Homer-fication.....although I rarely watch the show anymore. I still wish Homer was my dad.

I saw the Simpsons movie this afternoon.

I thought it had funny moments, but overall, not all that great. I was glad when it ended.

I feel almost the same. The only difference is I wasn't glad when the movie ended. Would've liked more, and by more, I mean supporting characters.
