Since they're twins, shouldn't they both be gay (or both straight)? I mean, the Liberals keep saying that homosexuality is a genetic thing, and since twins have 100% the same DNA...
Or it could be that the Simpsons are saying that homosexuality is a choice, which is what conservatives believe. Patty made her choice and Selma made hers.
So what is it, nurture or Nature? I really hope someone gets fired for this lack of clarity.

psychologists don't really know what "causes" homosexuality. It seems that there are some genetic factors, and then again, there might not be. one thing that has been clearly ruled out, except by the christian right is that it's "choice."
But the reason they want it to be a choice is so they can then turn around and dismiss it. "It's a choice, so then they don't have to make that choice, and they can be 'normal'".
Which leads to a search, by the other side, for a "gay gene" in order to protect themselves. If it's not a choice, then it's harder for them to be dismissed.
Nobody seeks an "ice cream gene" to explain why someone would like vanilla ice cream rather than chocolate. On some level, that is a choice, yet whatever goes into that liking is irrelevant because it's only ice cream, not sex.
But since it is sex, and some want to call it "abnormal" that's where the fuss comes from.
People can get to same sex activity and relationships from a wide variety of paths, but it's only the constructs of heterosexuality versus homosexuality that limits most people's ability to see that.

On the MAJOR genes they are almost all the same but once you break the genes down there are wide differences.
Womb and hormonal influences from the mother affect genes too. Ever wonder why Identical Twins have DIFFERENT fingerprints?
The fact is though about 75% of identical twins are both Gay if one is. This shows a genetic component.
Another interesting statistic. The more children born to the same man and wife, increases the risk that the last child will be gay. It is unusual for the first born to be gay and NONE of the other siblings to be gay. It's by no means unheard of but it just doesn't occur often.
Usually the kids born last are gay. Interesting. So in this respect Patty being gay is also going against the norm.
So being a gay identical twin born first makes Patty unusual but hardly uncommon.

Because fingerprints are like the coat patterns of cats, they are formed spontaneously in the womb and are not patterned by DNA. Cloned kittens, which have identical DNA, often have very different coats because the coat patterns are not mapped out by genes.
