How do you set up your killfile? I killfiled that idiot "rob wade" or whatever his name is. I don't see his posts. Unfortunately, many idiots respond to his posts. And I see all of their responses. How do I stop my newsreader from receiving all the responses from the idiots? I don't know their names ahead of time.

Try filtering by key words in the subject line.

There is some nuance. Newsreaders fetch different headers differently. There are certain headers in the "overview" (Subject, From, References, and some others) that are fetched one way; headers like NNTP-Posting-Host are fetched only when one downloads the entire message.

Also, some newsservers screw up the References header, only downloading the last few references. And then there's AOL, which doesn't even use NNTP for Usenet. Having said that, however, IF:

1) Your newsserver keeps all the References in the References: header, AND 2) the offending poster in question has a unique string in their Message- ID

you *should* be able to killfile threads from the point a certain author gets involved. It takes a newsreader (or a proxy server) that has the ability to filter on the References header. I don't know that Free Agent can do that.

I'm not an expert on these things, so I make have gotten some of the facts wrong. If you really want the full gory details, you should probably ask on news.software.readers, where they'd be happy to give you more info.

What Free Agent *does* do is allow me to download only the message headers, and then select which message bodies I want to look at. The headers are automatically organized into threads. Suppose the rob wade bot posts a message that generates a 100-reply thread. Free Agent lists the threads like so:

	[+100]	Gay freemasons run the country (rob wade)
	[+2]	Q:  What was that song Lisa played? (Tintin)
	[+3]	Cabsub for CABF14 (Michael Haas)

You can see that even though the majority of traffic was for the rob wade message, it occupies very little space on the screen, making it easy to ignore even without the convenience of killfiling. Find that too hard? Free Agent lets you mark entire threads as "ignore," and now that I think about it that's just a manual version of the feature I was asking about in the first place.

Anyway, if your newsreader lets you read and not read by thread (as opposed to stepping through each message), this might be a good way to minimize the rob wade problem.
