I was about 12 when The Simpsons episode with a flaming Homer drink was shown.

One day before school, I mixed together all the liqour from my parent's cabinet ( they weren't home ), added some cough syrup, and lit a flame over it. I don't think it actually caught fire, but a flame did come out as I put the match over it.

Tasted like crap.

Maybe I should've used a different flavor of cough syrup.

But seriously, your problem is evident to any hardened alcoholic. You didn't use enough alcohol. In order to get it to ignite, you'd need it to be at least 100 proof (50% alcohol by volume)*. For the thing to work, you'd need to top it off with Bacardi 151 or Everclear after the cough syrup.

* Actually, I have had success getting 94-proof Tanqueray to ignite, but just barely. Not that I would ever waste good Tanq', mind you, but a bit of it spilled out of my glass once, and so I decided to do a little experiment.
