Actually it does. I was gonna respond to this post with a statement that they would have all lived had they had an inanimate carbon rod, but that's too ghoulish. I still vividly remember the Challenger (has it really been 17 years? Damn I'm getting old.). Reagan defined his legacy with the speech he gave that night on TV. I hope Bush can repeat that triumph.

No, everyone's still talking about last week's State of the Union pseudo-war declaration. The upcoming Gulf War II will quickly eclipse today's shuttle mishap.

I do hope the country doesn't spend a long time moping over this. We need to be regularly reminded that spaceflight is a dangerous game. Let the authorities find out what went wrong as soon as possible, fix the other shuttles if needed, then launch again asap. That's the best way to get past this sort of thing, just like falling off a bike you want to get back on it again.

here is the only place i know of that when something bad happens in the public eye we tend to milkit for all that it's worth

it is a sad event that happen but we must not stand still for to long

i say lookover the next flight and fire her up asap not 32 months later let's make a syscapper high then 110 floors (hell do not the asiaen have a tower bigger then ours?)

we are the best and yes something is aways going to go worng all we can do is learn from it , but then agian how airplanes crash and do we ground every plane after a crash ?

Just last week we were discussing the fact that the Columbia had ants on board for some experiment. Just like Corvair. As for Reagan, his "reach out and touch the sky" or whatever it was in his speech was going to be "reach out and touch someone" until somebody remembered that that was the slogan for the phone company. The real life Ronald Reagan was about as brainless as the fictitious Homer Simpsons.

It's very sad about what just happened today.

You know, last night I watched the episode where Homer goes to space, and that just feels weird, that the next day, something scary happened up in space.

What's weird is that I saw the "Homer vs. New York" ep not long before 9/11/01; then the Homer in Space ep was shown as you say last night ... if they happen to show the Bart's Comet episode soon I'm going to be looking for a nice cave to hide in quick.

Or the channel was just commemorating the shuttles return with an episode of the Simpson's with a shuttle. Sometimes some broadcast stations are quirky that way. Much like you notice with whats going on currently with the Simpsons that the Itchy and Scratchy cartoons reflect a similar story line.

i.e., Homer is going into space and coincidently Itchy and Scratchy had a space cartoon.

(But you gotta wonder if the station manager or program director was covering his eyes after the tragedy wondering why he put on that episode before they returned. Hindsight is 20/20.)

BTW, maybe my memory has been short-circuited from years of fast living but in the "Homer in Space" episode wasn't the ship not actually a space shuttle? I recall that it looked like some sort of min-shuttle and was mounted on top of a single rocket, not strapped to the side of three fuel tanks as with our space shuttle. Or maybe that was a different episode? I think the producers wanted to avoid references to the Challenger disaster.

Yeah, I think it's cool when they do that.
