Tonight's episode was great. An interesting plot and flawless characterizations all around supplemented with a nice showing of humor made this yet another Jean era hit. The pairing of Marge and Nelson was almost as inspired as Maggie and Moe in EABF17, with their relationship developed well and explored in an interesting way. Even though Nelson didn't seem like a likely candidate for character expansion, it flowed naturally. And Marge's characterization was perfect, which hasn't happened in a while. Lisa's subplot was well done as well, with her characterization being very believable for an eight year old girl, which she is, remember. Both plots had some hilarious gags (Krabappel and Skinner, top bunk, "Happy Labor Day Lenny", all of Marge's lameness) and some characters (Sherri and Terri, namely) were the funniest they've ever been. The end to the main plot was rushed (though I thought Lisa's wrapped up nicely, in a Blood Feud/$pringfield kind of way) and that brings the episode down a bit, but overall, a great showing, 9.5/10. (A-/A)
The sign in the bowling alley that read "N.H.C. Champs: 16 Seasons!" seems to be a message to the members of the largest moderated Simpsons Internet forum, The No Homers Club (NHC), at nohomers.net.
Homer drawing himself and making his hair and ear form an �M' and a �G' stems from the rumor that in the Ullman Era, Matt Groening drew Homer like this to leave his mark. In reality, that was eliminated from his character design before it ever hit air. Now the ear only vaguely resembles a �G'.
Unfortunately, this will be Lauren MacMullan's last episode to direct, as she is leaving the show to work for Nickelodeon. The excellent use of light, shadow, camera angles, and all that good stuff that she brought to the show will sorely be missed. Here's to one hell of a director!
This marks the third appearance that she has made in the FABF production line (the other two being FABF13 and FABF17). Maybe she'll have a speaking role next time? Eh? Eh?
