What is Martin playing with

In Itchy and scratchy and Marge, once the cartoons become "boring" all the kids are outside playing. What is that stick and circle that Martin is pushing around, is that some sort of old fashioned toy or something?

I remember something called "black and white TV". We had to turn a knob called a "channel changer" to change the channels, and it was attached to the TV! Surfing was something you did at the beach, and "channel surfing" was when you tricked your little brother into getting up out of his chair and turning this "channel changer" thingy for you. And the channels only went from 2 to dickety. None of this 500 channel stuff. Jack Paar was the host of The Tonight Show back then, and Dick Cavett was an annoying man on TV, instead of being, um, oh well, some things never change. AND WE LIKED IT! (oops, wrong ng for that comment).

The hoop is a metal band from a wooden barrel. Wooden barrels used to be used instead of crates to ship items. Each barrel had two metal bands to hold the wood together. When barrel eventually fell apart, kids would play barrel hoop.

It just a hoop and a stick. Your roll the hoop with the stick. It is supposed to be fun. There's nothing more to it. I don't even think there's some registered trademark attached to it, like "Hoop-O-Stick" or something.
