Hook it up: Cable from wall into VCR-->Digital Box-->TV, you can timer record regular cable channels (but not the specialty digital channels). That's how I've got mine hooked up. It works because the cable has the digital signal AND the analog signal, so any channel you would normally get (and local FOX affiliate or Global in Canada should be on there) can still be recorded on VCR. BUT... If you want to record a movie from the movie channels, you gotta switch some wires around.

Well, the easiest way if no one else will be in your house to mess with it is leave the box on the correct channel when you leave and then set your VCR. BUT, you have Time Warner don't you? and an Explorer 2000 converter box? Assuming ya'll have the same boxes we do in Austin, there is an option somewhere in the cable box options to set it to change to a certain channel at a certain time (i'm pretty sure it will turn it on at the right time if it is off and you can tell it to turn it back off too), then you set your VCR for the same time. It's a pain to have to set two different timers but it works...I used to do it all the time. Eventually I just plugged a cable straight into my VCR from the wall to get analog cable through the VCR and so I could just set the VCR timer because I hardly ever record anything off of digital only channels anyway.

If you have a different kind of converter that doesn't have this option, call Time Warner and tell them they suck and they need to give ya'll better cable boxes.

I've had *cable* boxes with timers, but not a *digital* cable box with a timer... I checked one time, and finally called TimeWarner to ask how to set the time and found out the unfortunent news. Friends in LA and AL have the same problem, so I assumed (and was told) that the problem was being addressed by our best consumer technology minds.

Yep, you're getting screwed. We have Scientific Atlanta converters here which are the same ones we've had since they introduced digital cable here in like 1998. They have lots of different timers including on/off, program reminder, record. So digital converters and program guides with timers do exist and Timer Warner uses them in other places. I guess each city contracts their own vendors separately for converters and such. My sympathies.

Yeah, that's a pretty good idea I never really thought of that. But occasionally I would record stuff off of digital channels so I liked having it connected to the VCR as well so I could.

You can do both, but you'll have to follow me on this one: Hook Cable from wall into VCR, then into digital box, then cable out into TV. Then hook RCA cables (the red/yellow/white) from the digital box (assuming there's outlets, there should be) into the VCR's AUX IN. Then you can record normal stations with timer, and record premium channels by setting the VCR to the "LINE" channel (or whatever is below channel 2).

So:

                            ||                          ||
Wall --cable-->VCR--cable-->digital box--cable-->TV

I think i just made it more complicated than it needs to be.

Well that's basically the same concept except that I split the coax from the wall and had one going to the VCR and one going to the box and then I had RCA from the box to the VCR. Although it works the same, going from the VCR to the box and then back to the VCR again is just a little too roundabout for me, I prefer the straightforward approach.
