Episode Capsule Submission for "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson" [4F22]

Hi. I saw this episode rerun recently on my local FOX affiliate, surprising, what with the terrorist attacks on September 11 last year and Homer's car getting parked in between the Twin Towers.

Didja Notice... -Marge seems a bit obsessed with Governor's Island ("Wow, Governor's Island!" and "Governor's Island seems so small from up here!"), even though it's not really considered a landmark? -The actor in the Broadway play getting light punishment for his crimes because he's rich and famous is right on target for Hollywood (and some other places in the U.S.) these days?

Movies and Other References

Robert Downey, Jr. -The actor in the Broadway show looks surprisingly like him.

Robert Wadlow, tallest man to ever live -The tall guy on the bus resembles him.

Animation, Continuity, and Other Goofs

When Homer throws the baby pictures into the fire, in the picture of Patty and Selma above the fireplace, one of their hairdos appears to be red (I don't remember which twin).

Review

Excellent, funny episode, even after September 11 (hey, no terrorist references or anything, anything to make a New Yorker squeamish, IMO). Homer was his usual wacky, stupid self (i.e. Trying to reach the pizza place with a stick, choosing Crab Juice over Mountain Dew), and it was all good, methinks. A definite A+.

Syndication Cuts

Homer thinking the tall guy's legs on the bus were his.

The running gag throughout the entire episode is how Marge is infatuated with things in New York which are not famous. On the bus coming out of the Lincoln tunnel, she states:

"Look! Fourth Avenue! The Williamsburgh Bridge! Governor's Island!"

If you could pick the least famous avenue, East river bridge and NYC harbor island, those are it. It's a gag that people unfamiliar with NYC would not get.

BTW, the flashback of Homer's first visit to New York City in the mid-70's may seem an exaggeration, but it truly was that bad, crime wise, at that time.
