And my wife, who works at our local humane society, was *thrilled* that they portrayed shelter workers as eager to kill animals. Was it meant to be a joke? Possibly. Was it a joke? No.

The Humane Society/SPCA would be right to take offence at such characterization--they're not PETA, after all(1). The pound worker on the show, however, while she did say she enjoyed putting them down, *did* try other alternatives getting them adopted.

You know, you have made an excellent point. PETA is no friend of the mainstream animal care organizations. I was always a little queasy about PETAs ideals and methods. When I saw Penn & Teller's "Bullshit" episode on them (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7562800910863882593&q=penn+teller+bullshit+PETA) I was officially appalled. They have done some genuine good for animals, but it is very little.
Considering the amount of sympathy the writers show for PETA (or at least PETA-related causes) through Lisa's character, it seems possible that the dig at animal shelters was intentional.
