Okay, I've been debating on whether to post this for fear of sounding like a jerk, but then I remember what newsgroup this is.
I agree more with 'That Guy' in that it's not funny, but it is not it's triteness that I object to. It's kind of clever, but not really clever enough. Sure, the reference will be obscure to most. But it's like the writers came up with one or two lines, settled on 'Pangea' and went on.
Remember when Burns was gathering up his ringer softball team? He wanted Smithers to find all these old time players, who were long dead. He didn't just say "bring me the 1878 New York Zingers" (or whatever), the joke actually named a few of them. It was a little weirder, a little more clever, and the writers put in the extra work.
My entry for Burn's reply? "Roanoke Colony, Virginia"
I said obscure to "most", not the nerds that hang around in this ng.
Go ask 10 people on the street what "Pangea" refers to, then report the results back here. Unless the street is running through a university, I'd wager 1 or 2 would know, and I'm being generous.
YES, I know that, and then I said, "You've got to be joking."
I AM NOT A NERD. I do not snort when I breathe, I am not overweight or freakishly skinny, I do not wear glasses, I play many sports, I have many friends of both sexes, and I have no medical conditions such as chronic nose bleeding or ear problems. I don't beat up nerds either since I respect their many positive qualities such as superior intelligence which I also have.
I clearly remember learning about Pangaea in elementary school. "MOST" people in my community have gone to elementary school and so the Pangaea reference should certainly NOT be obscure.
Monster Island isn't really an island, it's actually a peninsula.
OMG MR. FLOWERS!!! "HAVE GONE" IS A PAST TENSE VERB!!! You remember studying the past tense in school, don't you??!! Also, don't call Green Bay crazy.
No sir I have not, I really don't have time to ask complete strangers basic questions such as "what direction is up?" or "what color is an orange?" or "what is Pangaea?".
I still haven't completed my cro-magnon survey. YOU can do the Pangaea survey if you wish, that is, if you have the scientific resourcefulness. I predict that at least seven people will say that they know.
Then take the ones that DON'T know and test them to see if they are dumber than a hamster.
Of course I have. I'm not an idiot. However I've never heard of any colloquialism that allows you to alter referenced statements in order to twist the original meaning so you can personally insult the man against whom you are losing an argument. This must be an Albany thing. Tell me, do you really have steamed hams there? Sounds like a crazy explanation to me.
<in Linguo's voice> all those people HAVING GONE to elementary school.
All right, Mister: you want trouble? You're going to get trouble. [3F09]
You certainly speak like a nerd. I think you're making all that other stuff up. In reality I'll bet you're a short, skinny kid with black horn-rimmed glasses with big wads of white tape holding them together, messy hair, no friends of the opposite sex and get swirlies on a daily basis.
Yeah? (and) I believe that you are fat, 300-350 pounds, have glasses, have ear problems that require medicine, have standing reservations at Taco Bell, have a poorly groomed goatee, at any time have pie on your face, haven't showered in the last seven days, get no exercise except typing, clicking your mouse and chewing, have a receding hairline with a long pony tail, haven't had a date in twenty years and your crack is clearly visible every time you sit down. Oh yeah, and you probably speak Klingon fluently.
You were way off describing me. I'm not short. I have no glasses. I have lots of friends of both sexes AS I JUST SAID. I'm not a kid, I'm a man. Of course I have messy hair. It's on purpose, it looks better messy. I'm skinny, but not freaky skinny, I've got big biceps because I exercise. I have no idea what swirlies are so I guess that I never get them.
BTW this post is on-topic since some traits of characters are referenced.
Hah! You're WAY off! You underestimated my weight by almost five pounds!
There is only one thing I can say about you, and that is that you appear to actually be taking this shit seriously. That, if nothing else, makes you a nerd to the nth degree. Sorry.
I need to buy new ears. I heard Burns say he was born in Algiers. So I missed the joke, damn. I thought it was weird for Burns to be born in Algeria...

Trying turning on the Closed Captioning.
No, really: Here's the surprising thing: Often times in THE SIMPSONS, apparently they change the punchline from the time the script is given to the closed captioners to the time it airs.
So fairly frequently, if you watch with Closed Captioning turned on, you'll see a different punchline than what is actually on the audio. And, sometimes, the original was funnier.
