So Burns cheated to get the crowd to pelt him with Marge's free pretzels before anyone tasted them? Also, how would the crowd know thar Burns cheated? Also, if the crowd knew he cheated then how is it that none of the officials running the contest knew Burns was cheating? Because if the officials knew Burns was cheating, surely the contest results would have been nullified.

Sounds awfully "Rube Goldbergian" when instead, they could just use the easy "Burns is filthy rich and everyone knows it. So they would be pissed if even if he won a pack of chewing gum in a contest" angle especially since whether Burns is cheating or not, has absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the episode.

There's no leap (or multiple leaps for that matter) needed to make it work. Plus, let's not forget, if Burns cheated and it had nothing to do with the plot of the show, why wouldn't they have just said that he cheated?

See, but you're assuming something occurred which is never mentioned or even implied in the episode.

It would be the same as if I decided to claim that during 2F21 The Springfield Connection, Lisa and Millhouse were dating even though it wasn't specifically mentioned or implied in the episode.

But, we can just assume this because we all know that Millhouse wants to date Lisa and during this episode Lisa somehow let her guard down and Millhouse moved in but since it wasn't important in the end, it was never specifically mentioned.

Right, I know what you asked. I said no, because one WOULD have to assume everything previously mentioned, which makes absolutely no sense especially since Burns being rich is more than enough to incite such a response for winning that contest. Why would they need any other reason?

Right, because if he DID cheat, there would have been some mention of that somehow during that episode or even another episode, but there was none, ever.

For us to THINK he cheated would mean we have to ASSUME something took place that was at no other time mentioned or implied in the context of that or any other episode.

The announcer knew who was sitting in seat 0001 (it was Mr. C. Montgomery Burns). Do they know who is sitting in each seat from 0001 - 9999 in case they win? Maybe not. Maybe he knew the name of the person because Burns cheated. If the peson in seat 0901 had won, maybe they wouldn't know the name of the person because that person would not have cheated.

Point is, we don't know that he didn't cheat and we don't know that he did. I asked what the opinion of the people here was on the subject. you're just nitpicking with everything I say.

Mr. Burns is one of the most recognizable people in Springfield. It's reasonable to suggest that the people who work in the stadium know where seat 0001 is since that doesn't change on a daily/weekly/monthly/seasonal basis. It's also further reasonable to suggest that the camera zoomed in on seat 0001 and the contest announcer recognized Burns sitting there. Not much of a leap at all.

Right, we also don't know that Millhouse was dating Lisa in The Springfield Connection and we don't know that Millhouse wasn't dating Lisa in The Springfield Connection. It's just as absurd of a scenario since it was never directly mentioned or implied, ever.
