The Day of the Locust http://us.imdb.com/Title?0072848 has been on various of the TMCs over the past week. I finally watched it today. Donald Sutherland as Homer Simpson. Wow. Coincidence, I guess, but Locust's Homer is a goodhearted simpleton who allows his good nature to be abused to the extent that it finally destroys him -- folks who have seen this movie will know that I don't mean that in any sense figuratively. He lacks OFF's Homers callous disregard of the feelings of others and possesses an ingenuousness that really earned my empathy. It's interesting that this move came out (credits said '74) a least a half decade before Sutherland was a really significant box office draw, yet although Homer Simpson is NOT the main character, and at least four other actors get more screen time he is topbilled. I guess I shoulda' labeled this [OT}
Day of the Locust
Just as a point of fact- the book was published in 1939
whne the movie was made in 1974, Donald Sutherland had made over 20 movies by this time, where as the actor playing the protagonist Todd Hackett had only made four
Read the book, it's not his good nature that destroys him. Or rather, not *just* his good nature.

Plus Sutherland had starred in 1970's "M*A*S*H", which was a big hit, so virtually everyone had heard of him by '74.
