I'm pretty sure this is unprecidented -- 2 new episodes each Sunday for 3 weeks in a row. The only other two times there's been two new episodes in one night, that I can recall, were Homerpalooza/Summer of 4 Ft. 2 and The Bart of War/Moe Baby Blues.
They're just giving the public what it wants: Bart by the barrelfull!
Of course, they could always go to plan B and put in a viewing of "Independent Day" on one of those Sundays.

Yeah, the movie about the people who had that special day where they achieved independence. But I can't seem to remember the name of the movie.
