"Bart of War" South Park reference

In this episode there is a funny spoof of South Park (I think they were a lot meaner than South Park were to them in "The Simpsons Already Did It" though).

Anyway, why does Bart say there's only 43 episodes of South Park?

Apparently, most South Park episodes are done from concept to completion in less than a week, which is why so many involve issues relevant to the time of their airing. Some Simpsons episodes take up to a year to produce, especially when they involve guest stars.

My point is, perhaps this episode of the simpsons is older than we think. Is there any chance that this episode just took really long to make? Or is this episode meant to be from a previous season, like the episodes in the current season of Futurama? Or, most likely, did I miss the joke altogether?

I have to agree; I thought the South Park gag was insulting, unnecessary, and worst of all, not funny. The South Park "Simpson's" episode was a cool tribute to the show, I'm surprised the Simpson producers/writers didn't see it that way (at one point, Chef even refers to it as a "great show," if I'm not mistaken).

Hell, Trey Parker and Matt Stone probably wrote the episode out of their own frustration about how many times they themselves had run into "The Simpson's Did It" syndrome while writing South Park.

And hey, anyone who can write a semen gag and make it genuinely funny is alright by me...

They were poking fun at South Park's admittingly lazy production values (seven episodes, then a break til october), as well as maybe poking back at the comment in South Park's spoof about there being only 132 episodes. Personally, I think the parody was biting but at the same time loving, much in the way the South Park one was done.

But in their parody of South Park, Cartman is killed by O. J. Simpson. Cartman never died on South Park, Kenny did.

As well, on Simpsons no one has ever joined the circus. It was just a joke.

I saw that at an animation festival. But The Simpsons was parodying the show South Park not the Christmas card.

But the Christmas card was what started it all. Either A. they knew about it and killed Cartman just for the reference, or B. they're clueless and killed Cartman instead of Kenny. oh come on!!! you're getting defensive about SOUTH PARK!? the south park gag was FUNNY because the simpsons is superior to south park in every way. i don't care if they WERE paying tribute or shooting it down, it was a JOKE! look, if you don't have a sense of humor, you shouldn't be watching comedy.

*Every* way? How about musically? There have been some pretty good musical numbers on The Simpsons, certainly, but I can't recall any as good as the musical numbers from the South Park movie, or the christmas episodes.

I do not think this episode is from a previous season. As for the joke, it was a spoof of classic South Park. As for comparison of shows, on "Simpsons did it" someone said that The Simpsons has produced only 138 episodes and was a perfect foil to Butters plans. At the time of that South Park episode's airing, The Simpsons had aired over 250 episodes.

My bad. Offhand, I thought that Butters said that there were 138 episodes of the Simpsons, but you may have caught a fall 2002 rerun of South Park. The episode first aired June 26, 2002, but may have reran before November.

Also, concerning the episode, Bart never did replace the contents of a cherry with "yukky, sticky mayonnaise." Of course, O.J. never appeared on South Park either.

Yes, he did. O. J. appeared in "Butters' Very Own Episode" (Episode 514; Original Air Date: 12-12-2001).
