Simpsons The Lastest Gun in the West 30 min. Dennis Weaver, whose nearly 50-year career on TV includes Gunsmoke, McCloud and Gentle Ben, provides the voice of Buck McCoy, an old cowboy star who becomes Bart's new hero. They first meet after a stray dog chases Bart onto the grounds of Buck's mansion. Bart becomes pals with the horse-opera great, who later visits the Simpsons and brings along video highlights of his career. With Bart's help, it's not long before a Western craze sweeps Springfield Elementary, and he and Lisa land Buck a guest spot on Krusty the Clown's TV show. This could be Buck's big shot at a comeback, but there's a problem: His film career isn't the only thing that could use rehab.

REVIEW: Not an altogether bad episode, but some of these character traits seem to come from nowhere. Well, actually, it is something that has been done about 10 times on the show already so I guess we were due another one this season. Homer all of a sudden giving a damn about his son's image of him seems a little out of the norm, but I guess every once and a while it may make some sense. It was not a very funny episode either. One third of the episode was about Bart running from some strange dog, and one third was about Barts hero worship of a movie star cowboy, neither of which had me RITFLMAO. Not that there are too many things on the show that do that (lots of heh heh that is cute jokes but nothing that I could watch 10 years from now and still laugh about), but still, I want something a little more than heh heh. Was there anything funny about the cowboy's house? Is it funny to shoot a prop clown in the crotch? I think not. GRADE: C+

It appears to be a take on an old Tonight show, in which Johnny Carson had a knife thrower on. He had the knife thrower throw an axe at a cardboard cutout, and he inadvertedly hit the cutout in the crotch, creating one of the funniest moments in the old tonight show (keep in mind, this was way before crotch shots were considered comedy).

It was none other than Ed Ames, who played "Mingo" on the old "Daniel Boone" TV show with Fess Parker. Ames threw a hatchet, not a knife. AND, if Weaver hadn't been available for last night's show, Parker would have been a good man for the job instead!
