Since I've been relegated to using Google Groups for my browsing, I have apparently ridiculed a couple of posters for what appear to be posts added to really long, really old threads. Apparently, Google puts together different threads with the same name. As pennance, I will voluntarily miss tongiht's Global rerun of one of the old-time classic episodes, "Homer the Vigilante". (running due to Fox pre-emption).

It's true what you say about Google. As a Google user myself, this also confused me for quite a while.
Here's another caveat: Usenet is a highly asynchronous medium. (For example, Google doesn't pick up new posts for 3 to 6 hours.) If you see a bunch of "first" replies to a post that all say the same thing, it's because none of those authors could see the other responses when they pulled the trigger on their own. Almost nobody would see three responses saying "A wizard did it", and think "That was so funny, I'll add a fourth!".

Beats me. It just does. Note that it doesn't take 3-6 hours to *post* using Google, it just takes new posts that long to show up when reading news with Google. New posts via Google show up more or less immediately for those using a regular news server.

They're supposed to. It's company policy. Depending on mid-level management for the area though, somtimes they let the phone numbers slide for purchases under $3 ($5 in Canada)
