So I'm watching the daily Simpsons rerun on CBC in Canada and today it's "Team Homer." The bit where Homer's trophy case is shown, the area on the Oscar just under where Homer's name has been written in was blurred out.
Anyone have any idea why it would be censored?
It originally said Hang S. Ngor who was shot and killed in February 1996, a little more than a month after that episode first aired in the US. I don't know if it was aired again on Fox with that name after that, but it was changed to Don Ameche for syndication. I guess they figured someone who died less recently and non-violently was better. I guess CBC didn't feel comfortable with either.

By the way if you are a fan of TV references soon before death: Julius Wechter, the composer of "Spanish Flea" died the day after "Sunday Cruddy Sunday" aired, which is one of the episodes (and happens to be the last, so far) that features that song.

Originally it said "Don Ameche," but when Ameche died, they changed it to 1984 best supporting actor "Haing S. Ngor" (The Killing Fields) for syndication airings.
I imagine they blurred it out of respect for Haing S. Ngor's family after he was brutally gunned down a few years later.
You've got it backwards...interestingly, they kept Haing S. Ngor in an episode of the Critic...anyway, I wonder what they'll put on the season 7 DVD...by the time it comes out, neither will be remotely recent!

I think part of the reason they changed it wasn't so much that he died, but the WAY he died (murdered). One could almost see it and infer that Homer had killed him and stolen his Oscar.

on a related note, i wonder what will happen on the DVD with 3F01 Homer Sweet Home-Diddly-Dum-Doodily with the Pier One reference (which was changed to Trader Pete's in subsequent airings). i don't know the whole story, but I hope it's pier one on the dvd, cause that's just so much more funny.

when bart gets called in for head lice inspection in the foster parent episode, principal skinner i believe asks how a child in this day and age gets head lice. there is then a flashback to bart and milhouse playing at milhouse's and there's a monkey crawling all over bart's head. milhouse, in the original air, says, "we bought a wicker basket from Pier One and he was passed out inside!" but upon subsequent airings on fox - i don't know what happened in syndication but i assume it's the same - the Pier One was changed to Trader Pete's. this may be an urban legend, but a friend of mine said the joke came after someone bought a cactus from Pier One and it tipped and broke open and lots of poisonous spiders came crawling out and it was quite a scene/cleanup. i may have skewed the details and it may not be true at all, but apparently Pier One wasn't happy about the joke and asked that it be removed. i don't know if i believe all this. it's fun to believe it! but it might be something much more mundane. anyone know the whole story???
The spider thing is an urban legen, it's been told many different ways usually with a more general "brought a cactus home from a trip to mexico" sort of thing rather then a specific store and sometimes it's a yucca instead of a cactus.
