Ok, we all know that the chase scene was a reference to something. The question: What is that something?
Chase animation

Opening credits to "Catch Me If You Can".
Obviously "Catch me if you Can". I haven't even seen the movie, but the sequence tonight certainly resembled what I saw in the ads for the movie, and maybe even the print ads.
Oddly, though, it also had the look of an old video game, from when resolution was not so high. They likely had no choice, because how do you represent animation on an animated show?
Michael
yeah a classic super mario bros game.

I understoond the reference, but why did the characters have the black outline around their heads?

Actually, the movie's animation was equally stylized. Minimalist, clean-lined drawing was popular, both for animation and still drawings, back in the late 50s and early 60s.
I gather that from another message.
I didn't notice the style of drawing in the ads. The sequence did have the same feel as the ad, with the jazz theme, and even the fact that the film was sort of a throwback to days gone by when movies would open with such animated sequences.
I still say it looks like an old video game, though that's not disclaiming that it matches what's in the movie.
I also have a feeling, though nothing concrete, that we have seen a video game sequence before in the Simpsons. Or maybe I'm thinking of the Seinfeld episode where George tries to get across the street pushing a video game,
Michael
That was the one with George pushing Frogger video game to get power and he was running off a battery or something. That's a funny one.
